Yesterday was my day of check-up. And my OS was very happy with my progress! She was well impressed and encouraged me to by all means keep doing whatever it was I was doing.
I went in without crutch or cane as well, which surprised her. Not so much that I could, but that I was confident enough to do without and with only a minor limp originating from the left hip (the now bad one).
The X-ray, showing that indeed they stuck metal in the right side, also showed that the left side keeps deteriorating. Apparently I'm part of a small elite group of hippies, that consists of roughly 0.5% of all hippies (AVN and needing both sides done). For the time being, I'm going to be on pain medication to tie me over until the holidays are done, so the advice was to be cautious, but for the unoperated side more than the operated one. Which sounds strange, but one I'll take to heart. So when going to Bali, I'll be carrying both crutches to be sure.
After that verbal diarrhea though, all restrictions were lifted (well, aside from being careful obviously not to exacerbate the deterioration of the left side...)
Quite happy all in all.
Shame lefty decided to rear its head early, but something I can work with for a bit
That is great news for you. I agree plaes be careful of your un operated side. I am 10 weeks post op. Had my left side done and 4 weeks ago my right side has collapsed and it is extreemly painful. I got loads of paiful swelling too so I would not wish that on you. I am threrfore a member of that " Elite * group that has to have both done.
Well done you, keep on doing what you are doing. I am 10 weeks on now and am continuing to improve, you will too. Glad to hear about the statistics for needing both hips done. Very useful information. 💃🏾
I am being careful indeed. My focus is now more on doing things right with the left side. Right side can now be a buffer side (to an extent!) for the left.
Not going to expand working hours for now either. 4 hours daily is the max until the next operation. I'm not even letting myself get caught up in all the madness of releases that are coming up 😊
Apparently 87% of all hip operations are OA related, AVN overall represents 3% and then from that 3%, only 10-20% need both hips done.
She showed me some other numbers as well, in regards to men vs. women, where women need hips more often than men, but that was also to do with age ranges. And women still get older than men on average!
Hoi am6ft8 .... that is good news !!!! I am happy to read that I too belong to the Eitle group ... unlike you I feel that my surgeon thinks I need surgery on left hip as soon as possible ... honestly, it really is keeping me from progressing on the path of healing ... first I need the find another home by August 01 and then see him at the end of August ... knowing ehat I know now, I think I am even looking forward to another THR ....go figure .... any new exercises recommended ???
My left hip is now starting to block me somewhat as well. I can still do quite a bit of walking, I can still bend over far enough to tie my shoes (though left I do need to move from the inside as opposed to having an arm on either side of the leg) both sitting and standing.
What I can't do, is turn on my left leg, as it sends a very harsh signal that it doesn't like that. So I need to walk cautiously, especially when turning sharper corners. Straight lines, no issues. Just go a little below my 'old' walking speed really. Patience patience, no rushing for the bus, metro or train. Another one will come eventually...
It is strange indeed, I too am looking forward to the next operation.. I'm very ready for it. But, as the doctor sai, rather have three months in between, to be certain of proper support from the already done hip.
Have to say, were it not for the holiday to Bali, I'd have fought for an earlier date...
as for excercises, I showed her the Pocket Physio app and she liked it a lot! Basically, the excercises in there are very good and serve as great addition to daily things. Especially the excercises that will address muscle groups you don't always use daily (like swinging out your leg to the side, something I never catch myself doing just for the hell of it...)
i wish you a lot of luck with house hunting and hopefully you have plenty people for moving stuff? And fingers crossed for a quick operation date, the sooner the better right?
I am glad you have taken tthe warning on Board. Honestly if your un operated side goes it really will set you back a lot. I am only jusat now able to walk about ten feet before it gets too miuch and I can no longer extend my right knee and if I do it is very paiful also. I hope you last till they can get you in. If your unoperated side does become painful get intouch with your surgeon and go in for an x ray. If it does go they usually put you at the top of the list as long as you are at least 3 months post op from your other hip being done and how well you went with your first one. 😊
That's the idea, survive the next 6-8 weeks, then go in and get myself sorted. I must say, having read the tales of waiting lists over in the UK, I'm glad to be in Holland... The first operation was decided on April 21st, I was scheduled for operation (initially) May 1st, but then had to wait until May 15th. Still though, from decision to execution took less than a month.
So I'm awaiting the anaesthesist's call on Friday, then the appointment of when as soon as my daughter's summer holiday is finished, as that fits the 3 month marker.
So, holiday is all well, but at a slightly lesser pace than hoped for 😉
It has worked out well for you then. Yes the waiting ti,es in the UK for many things is really bad. But South Wales is the worst of the lot. I have even known people in my village die waiting for treatment which is really sad.
Hi am6ft8 , glad to hear all is well , I had my two done at the same time and so glad I had the chance . When first diagnosed three and a half years ago it was my right hip that was the worst but my left quickly caught up so asked if he would do the two and grabbed the chance . It was very hard the first few weeks and three months on am pretty good . Still have an odd bad day but thats the healing prossess . Have they offered to do your left one soon ? Hope you have a fab time in Bali , you are doing great , regards , Ruth
I am also one elites I have got to wait 3 months to see the surgeon again and be put on list for the other side I will take the pain killers still even it helps to keep the left hip comfortable till I have the op which should be early next year unless I get a cancellation again I am glad everything is going okay for you 😀
