Hello well its nearly my time for RTHR at Burnley hospital lancashire in fact Thursday 19th October I feel quite frightened but nothing can be worse than the pain I have at the moment so all in all I can't wait to get my life back and enjoy walking pain-free in my beautiful Lancashire.
Hi Susan, I've had my new hip 12 weeks TMRW, it's very frustrating, just don't expect too much too soon. And don't believe anyone who tells you they were rock climbing or cart wheeling just weeks later, it's disheartening AND it's not true. Good luck on the 19th :-)
HI I had mine done just over 3 weeks and all I can say it was the best thing I have done I’m no longer in pain and I’m so much happier the only down side is I find it had to get a good night sleep only because u can only lay on your back
Evening Susan
From what I’ve learned this afternoon your ambition to walk pain free isn’t very far away !
The pain is really very bad this evening for me too ...does your pain go right down your leg like a wave?
I’m decided that I’ll email my consultant tomorrow to get the ball rolling
Nothing is going to make this better xx
Please let me know how you get on !
Lots of luck, Susan! At just over seven weeks, I find that, once I get going, walking is coming along. But every time I sit down the stiffness in my hips (I need the other one done) returns. I don't know how long it will be before I'm not reminded throughout the day that I've had hip surgery.
Hi Susan80676, Congratulations on your next step to wholeness and health. Most definitely there will be pain afterwards. I ask that you give yourself permission to heal and go at your own pace. Everyone is different. I am 4 months from my left hip THR and 1 month my right hip. I feel much better than my days of barely being able to get in and out of my car due to OA in both hips. It has been a long journey and truthfully some days I feel odd and not my full self. My surgeon and physical therapist all assure me I am on track. It will take a full year to completely recover. I had great nurses and care aids here in Hampton VA. All I can truly say is it helps to remain positive and be kind to yourself. You are worth the effort! Blessings! Teresa
Hi Tricia I totally agree with you about all these people who say there back to normal after 2/3 weeks!! I was starting to think something was wrong with mine !, TRH done 14 /9 so that makes me about 8/1/2weeks post op ,I'm still experiencing pain in my side every other day and my legs really ache and feel heavy I'm also really tired., probably down to not sleeping well , being on my back which I could never do before op , I have days where I think I'm going backwards, then the next day I will be pretty much pain free 🙈 Doing my exercises always makes my pains appear also . So in my estimation I really do believe everyone has very different healing times , and I've got to just take it day by day and hopefully be loving my new hip in the weeks months down the line , good health to you all on the forum and all remember, we are all different!! In healing ways ...
Hi Susan.
I can totally understand your anxiety and fear for the op but as someone who has had countless joint replacements i can tell you that it will be worth it. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and just had my right hip done (revision). Both hips were replaced at the same time when i was 15. Left hip was done for the second time in 2011. I agree with the others please dont rush yourself. It will take a long time to recover so give your body a chance to heal.
Although i have had many ops i was terrified for this one but it will be over before you know it.
I will be thinking of you. Let us know how it goes. Im here if you need a chat anytime. Xxxx
Hi Susan as everyone has said we all recover at different paces. I still remember, feeling useless that i was not doing better than I should be i was 56 when I had mine done 2 years ago, I woke up with that awful pain gone but the pain from the op was bad for me and i have a good pain threshold. Later discovered i had nerve damage but a course of amitryptaline sorted that out. I look back now at comments i made on social media and think it was not doing as bad as i perceived. Physio told me at 4 weeks post op, to get off the crutch i was on. i had only gone down to one earlier that week. I was off of crutches by five/six. weeks and never had a stick. Worse thing was sleeping on my back as i had back troubles anyway. It was grim! However early discharge team nurse told me to go to bed every afternoon for two hours as it also helped get rid of the fluid that builds up in the leg. Best advice ever as I used to sleep. I also used a rolled up towel under my low back and it helped back pain.
Just progress at your own pace, its not a race. Follow Surgeons advice and restrictions and you will be fine.
A few weeks ago danced for over three hours at my cousin's party, people didn't bevel i had a hip replacement lol
Run around the playgrounds with my grandson whose four.
Don’t be frightened Susan, you will wake up feeling fine and be very looked after. Make sure you have planned your home coming with family/friends to help, a fridge/freezer full of healthy food and lots of books/ films to keep you entertained. Rest is as important as exercise in your recovery so make sure your chair is comfy and you have a ‘reacher’ to help you.
I am now 3 weeks post THR and have been out on my crutches in the lovely Shropshire countryside! It’s helping my recovery so much
Good luck xx

Hello Susan l.m now five weeks post thr, I can honestly say I was terrified ,but knew I needed to get out of the constant pain I was in ......honest wished I,d not worried at all . The op was nowhere near as daunting as I,d anticipated, all that worrying for nothing . I,m going on really well I think. Still have my off days and few aches and pains .....but nothing like the pain I was in before. And would,nt hesitate having my other hip done should i need to . Wish you all the very best. X x x
Hi Susan: My surgery was 9/6. I took the first week very easy. Had to go have staples removed the second week and the day I was at the doctor's office I walked - with both legs - although still using the walker. Thereafter and since, I have been walking but my knee and my foot, both of which I previously broke, swell terribly. Still, I am able to walk pain-free but for the swelling. Oh, and I had an MRI of my knee to learn why it was SO swollen and learned I have a stress fracture of the knee. Doc isn't worried about it, said no brace and keep walking. I walked a lot yesterday and am paying for it today, oh but it was glorious while I was walking outside in the sunshine and not to have to be lugging the walker around. I have a cane but walk better without it until the swelling begins. I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm in the USA. Janet
As an old hand of almost 2 years now (one THR and one revision) I totally agree there.
Recovery is long and sometimes you take one step forward and three back, but eventually you should 'get there'. I estimate that it took me about 18 months to actually feel what I call properly OK again.
I still get twinges, and more recently squeaks (a bit like a door hinge) - getting that checked out next week at RNOH London.
Best wishes
Graham
Sounds like you need WD40 !
LOVE IT .... that sure made me chuckle.
Best wishes
Graham - 🚀💃 🤸 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I got new right hip 9/18/17 and the hospital allowed me to sleep on left hip with pillows between my legs so legs never crossed. Rolling over is a bit of challenge but oh so worth it to get off back. Hospital pillows a bit flat so they folded them in half and wedged them between my legs. At home I have My Pillows and they are so firm and fluffy that one pillow laid as is from crotch to just below knees is perfect! Hope this helps! Good luck!
Totally agree with you, Carol Ann. Wish I got my house better prepared. Raised toilet seat with handles are a must. Bought a tray to put on walker helps move meal and drinks and whatever else to and from. Decluttering as much as possible, less stuff to trip on. I have a Yorkie that LOVES to drag out every toy.having videos, good books, (I color and do crosswords and puzzles) helps while away the hours. I live alone and being able to pass the time happily helps!
Susan
Don't worry, you will feel so much better when it is done. But although it is, in many respects, a miraclke cure and generally you will wake up without that awful hip pain it will take a little while to get back to normal.
Good luck next week
Mike
