Need advice with taper

Without going into too much detail. Have had PMR for 2 years. Doing very well with dead slow taper. Must be brain fog. At 9.5, reducing to 9. At 9.5 for 25 days-all is well. Last 4 days only took 9. Don't know what I was thinking. What do I do now to get back on dead slow taper? 9.5 for how many days? Then 9 for how many days. Do not want a flate. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

if you just started,  and made a mistake... just start over... I am not sure how long your transition is... Some people use:

16 days transition ( starts with 1 new, 3 old, 1 new 2old, etc)...

26 days transition ( starts with 1 new, 4 old, 1 new 3old, etc)...

38 days transition ( starts with 1 new, 5 old, 1 new 4old, etc)...

52 days transition ( starts with 1 new, 6 old, 1 new 5old, etc)...

I hope that helps..

I am at exactly the same stage. I am doing 9 for 1 day, 9.5 for 6 days

9 for 2 days 9.5 for 5 days,

9 for 3 days 9.5 for 4 days.

9 for 4 days 9.5 for 3 days

9 for 5 days 9.5 for 2 days

9 for 6 days 9.5 for 1 day. Then that's me on to 9 every day.

I hope this makes sense. Perhaps you didn't need that amount of information. Would it be better to just carry on but do 9.5 for 4 days and 9 for 3 days and so on down the taper? Someone with more knowledge will be along to advise.

I keep a record, otherwise I would forget.

Are you well on these 9's?

If you are, you could pick up at

9 for 3 days then 9.5 for 4 days

9 for 4 days 9.5 for 3 days and so on.

HI Roberta, the tapering is the most difficult point of our treatment and the most complicated due to the fact we are all different , so what works for me may do not work for others.

the same illness comes with different symptoms.

My GCA comes without any pain now.p, I dud not gain weight after loosing 12  pounds and coming back to the same weight I had before - 125.

On the other hand it comes with lack of balance - Ataxia, which  I 've learned how to manage when walking slowly, Walking briskly is a breeze....

And thus it goes ...

it's great the opportunity we have to exchange our experiences.

May you stay well.

I am fine with just a few little "niggles" as someone called, so am a little concerned. Always keep a log but just wasn't thinking. Had one flare a year ago and don't want to have another. Thanks for comments.

Unfortunately we do not have the condition to go back and to reread our reply.

I see several mistakes - ' due to the fact' being one of them.

Sorry. Thank you for your patience.

Same here....I felt better with 10 mg.  9.5 mg has been causing a problm.

I probably should go back to 10 mg and try your method which I did not do when I started to reduce to 9 1/2.

Thank you for the guideline.

It has worked for me so far and I feel that if there was  any sign of a flare I could pick up on it quickly. This is the method I found on this forum. When I reduced from 12.5 I didn't go straight to 10 but did 11 for a few weeks and I had no flare despite having a very stressful period at that time. I don't reduce further if I know there is a stressful time coming up and I haven't yet had to increase my dosage. Of course, that could change as I reduce. It's such a fine balancing act and we all have different reactions to the steroids and at what stage the inflammation is at on the PMR journey.

Thnak you for your input when to reduce and when not.  I tried to "push it" and it did not work.  I will stay on 10 for a while, and then try your method with 9 1/2,

I think it's better not to push it. There are some people who think I should have reduced by more but they don't have PMR. I'm fine with how it is going and I prefer to get there than push on and end up back where I started. The main downside for me is the weight gain and I know the answer. I am fine when the weather is warm and sunny but it quickly changes and I reach for the carbs. Roll on Summer.....the clocks change tonight but it's a bit autumnal again. Good luck with your reduction when you are ready for it.
