I am 8 weeks out of surgery had both knees done same time.I have been released by both my home health nurse and my PT I work out every day am now walking with no cane.My problem is I am sore all the time even the pain meds barely take the edge off.I go outside and walk do the excerises I was taught I cook for myself am I doing enough or am I doing to much.I have thought about joining the YMCA to do therapy in the pool it might help .Can I hear your thoughts on this things. My straighting is 100 percent on both knees, bend 126 on my right knee 95 on my left knee. Any help would be greatly appreciate d.
Hi Tana!
To me it sounds as though you are ahead of the game and definitely on the right track!
My GOOD friend has had great success in the pool following arthroscopic surgery and is also attending water therapy sessions.
Generally on days when I am quite achy it usually is because of the weather or because I have overexerted myself. On achy days I read, have a nice cup of tea and wrap up in warm blankets. I have learned to give myself permission to just TAKE A BREAK!
My first TKR was last June, and my second TKR was last October. I am 64.
Having a day of rest REALLY helps me physically and mentally. Maybe try this to see if it helps.
I take Ibuprofen as needed but find that I don't require it as often as before.
Wishing you continued success on your recovery from two surgeries at one time!
Cheryl
Thanks for the info I just always assume if I'm sore then I haven't moved enough even though people say I'm way ahead of the curve. I feel bad if I am resting but now maybe I will give myself a bresk. can't wait to get in the pool and a cup of tea sounds good.
Hello Tana
Wow. Your are brave to have tkrs at same time. It sounds like you're doing great. I do understand the pain!!!
First, as you will find, most patients on this site have completely different experiences between their right and left tkr. You would be no different. I am not surprised you're in pain. 8 wks is not that far along- it takes a good year. Each leg has it's own personality and you're experiencing it as a double whamey. Keep up the exercizes, let your pt worry about the numbers and do very very little else for now. You need rest. You've had a major op times 2 which takes a huge toll.
There are many people on this great site that will be able to help along the way. Stay mentally strong and call out when you need a friend or really dozens of friends.
Much Luck. Elaine
Thanks Elaine
You are correct my left knee is my bad knee and my right is so easy wish they were both Like that .I think I over do a lot cause I heard if I don't work out bad things will happen .so I will do the pool and hope it helps and has less stiffness.
You are so brave having both done together. I am just 8 weeks after one TKR pain has gone just aches from nerves & inner knitting together. I think you are over doing it, my consultant said it takes a year to totally get right, 6 months all swelling should be yo a minimum & you get stronger & more confident. I'm very stiff first thing in a morning, I try to do a few exercises then potter around after an hour I really need to sit for ten minutes then I can go again, I go for physio next week & hydro the week after. I get just over 95% bend on my knee trying for more but in normal life 90% is enough, straightening is ok, by night time my knee is swollen again so I have bags on( peas in a bag are best) 10 mins only. Don't push yourself too much remember 12 month eps for complete repair..
Thanks for the info I use peas for icebags too I swear. I can't wait to get in the pool.
You sound as if you are doing great...especially having had both done together. You will feel sore at 8 weeks though. I've just started hydrotherapy, to see if I can get my very stiff knee working...and other people seem to have had very good results from it.
Thanks Pasty
I can't wait to get in the pool I hope it helps my stiffness.
