Hey. Im 22 and have an extreme phobia of being sick. this past month my mum, sister and boyrfriend have all been struck down with some sort of sickness bug. I am never ever ill and never catch anything but i think that why im so frightened. my sister was ill friday night its been over 48 hours and were all fine but im still panicing? I cant get over it and i ruined valentines day by being so anxious. i want to avoid medication if i can i just need some reasurance? My anxiety is extreme now and my day to day life is a challenge. i work full time which keeps me going but its stressful and im so anxious the whole time i could cry. Ive tried cbt the only thing that seems to help me is having someone to talk to. Im having a bad few days and it seems never ending
Hi Beth, sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious.
I have to say that there appear to be quite a lot of viruses going around at the moment, some of which make some people feel sick.
I like you hardly ever catch a cold or flu, or any of the airborn nasties that are going around, so we must just have a stronger immune system - maybe.
I am a Diabetic so I really do have to be careful that I don't catch these sort of things, and I like you used to worry about it a great deal. But when I thought back to my previously excellent history of somehow avoiding all these bugs I decided that worrying about what MIGHT happen was pointless and tiring.
So now adays I just tend to ignore all the streaming noses and caughs, and just carry on with my life, very much to the annoyance of all those around me.
Why not just try to do the same?
Your right we should ignore it but its so hard sometimes the only thing that bothers me is a tummy bug i dont mind anything else. Its hard to ignore tho when my sister is violently ill in the next room.
i am trying my hardest not to dwell on these situations though.
I quite agree, and it is easy to say 'just carry on', but not so easy to do it.
Nevertheless the anxiety brought about by worrying too much about something that MIGHT NOT happen to us, is often worse than what could happen.
In you case (and mine) it looks like we are lucky enough to have strong immune systems, so the prospect of actually contracting one of these unpleasant tummy bugs is less probable.
Having said that it is not impossible, so we must at such times take additional precautions such as washing our hands when we have touched something that might have been in contact with the sick person, using a different towel to dry ourselves and being very careful what we eat.
That said there is not a lot more that we can to other than try and control our emotions by not getting over-anxious.
No one ever said that life was easy, but on a positive note it is reassuring to know that as we get older and more experienced we do tend to take situations like this a little more in our stride.
