has anyone had nerve pain going down the thigh that comes and goes at any time and it's like an electric shock while waiting for a hip replacement?
Yes Keith I've experienced that pain, I believe it's the sciatic nerve. I've had my hip replacement and I'm suffering with my foot. It's swollen and the leg and ankle, I think it's nerve damage but I can't get my doctor to send me for a nerve conduction test, she just says it's too soon to tell. I've been trying since 2 weeks post op and I'm nearly 4 weeks but I'll keep trying until I get some satisfaction.

I was told I had Sciataica at first cause that pain was coming down the bck of the leg and was given nerve tablets and they worked for that but this is coming down the front of the thigh to the knee, it just comes on for no reason and only last for a second then gone, doc at hosp said it should be gone after the opp but can't guantee it but can do something about it,he said it was to do with the way I am walking( bent over) have. Dull ache in the hip but can put up with this , no pain killers have touched it, only two weeks to go before the opp.
I can say YES to that, before my hip replacement, some days there would almost be no pain, and the following day not able to get out of bed due to agonising pain, and that pain did travel.
I called it bone on bone pain, and the surgeon agreed with me, I was bone on bone and the x-rays showed no gap especially in the right hip.
Intereting that he also agreed and said other patients reported the same that you do get some days with no pain.
I have since found out that I also have arthritis in my spine, and also have narrowing between disc spaces, physio and swimming (treading water) exercises have helped alot, not at all keen on the idea of spinal fusion as they have suggested, even the otheopedic surgeon said try to delay spinal surgery as long as you can hold out.
Sciatic nerve pain can run down your leg, also in my case has caused change in feeling, dropped teaspoon on big toe other day, and it felt as though I had dropped a engine block on that big toe, nerve function retuning incorrect messages, also numbness in leg that moves around in calf, and instep.
This sharp electric shock type pain which only last a few seconds and just shoot down the thigh is horrendous,no numbness in leg or foot at all, have had Gabapentan pain killers and Morpheme patches for 3 months and nothing has worked, no point using patches but dr want me to carry on with the tablets, I can walk a few yards with a walking stick but this nerve pain can come on whatever you are doing or even when just sitting still, my wife have had to put up with me shouting out every time I get this cause it make me do that, roll on March 3 rd and am praying this will be gone afterwards cause I can't put up with this and the pain after the opp too.
I had a LTHR and I had nerve pain in the side and front of the left thigh sometimes it was like electric shock and other times it felt like burning, it is gone now.
So was it gone after you had the new hip?did you have pain killers that helped or not?
I also have OA in spine and other hip, my wife have narrow disks at base of spine.
I take Tramadol, Dr.says it helps with nerve pain. I have 3 bulging discs L1-L4 anddegenerative disc disease, so I try not to bend, twist or lift too much weight because I have a bad back.
Sthey didn't touch me even at higher dose, wife use Actipatch for her back
I know nerve pain is hard to ignore, I hope the surgery helps you. I have burning feeling in my back and tramadol and heating pad helps.
Thank you I hope so.
Oh yes and it is so painful. Got op on first hip next Wednesday. Hoping to say goodbye to it.
All the best with that.
Hi keith, i am preop, i get groin pain and aching in the thigh with what feels like the nerve being nipped in front of thigh. It aches inner thigh especially if standing or walking.
I have spinal arthritis too and this isnt like sciatica from the back that nerve is down buttock.
I too hope the sensations will go with surgery. Good luck 😊
Thanks Angela, it's an awful pain isn't it but at least I can sleep I only get it in bed when I try and lift the leg to turn over,do you have the same?how long have you been waiting to have the opp and do you have a date?
Keith Good news - In my case the severe pain, and the travelling pain was gone the day after my operation.
I still remember walking up the following morning to the nurses saying I hadn;t used my button on the computer to give myself extra painkiller during the night. I was able to tell her that I was in less pain 12 hours after my surgery than I was the previous morning walking?? in the front day of the hospital.
Not for long, she said the physios are due to arrive, and made me press the pain killer button, which immediatley made me vomit, knew then they had given me morphine, even though I had warned them it made me sick as a dog. (but better than pain)
Second time around with other hip, again pain, but not in buttock and back of leg, but in groin and front of leg.
Not such a good result apparently I am about 1-5% of hip replacements, but am getting there, if very slowly, my first hip replacement is at the perfect end of the scale, and the 2nd done by the senior consultant professor is right on the bottom end of the good replacemnt scale, and I have be battling.
Finally after a year of sometimes severe nerve pain, and investigations as above, its not my hip, but I believe it has contributed towards feeling the pain from my spine some years before it would have appeared otherwise, I am told it would have shown up eventually, even i can see that on my x-rays, they are not pretty.
All i can say is would I have both hip replacements done again YES YES YES, I am alot better and have better quality of life than I had before the repalcements.
I have this mostly all day and night. I have been told that my op should be in 4-6 weeks.
Apparently the head of the femur isnt too bad but loss of joint space now 50% worse than it was 12mths ago due to the arthritis.
Will be having full ceramic implant.
Do you have date for op?
I am hoping everything is straightforward as i work full time and my boss was taken aback at the prospect of me being off for upto 6mths (worse case scenario from the surgeon).
Do you work?
Yes March 3rd late morning. Had to wait 6 weeks even going private from the time of having the pre medical, and have to have another blood test a week before, can't wait to get this over with.
sorry, yes at 71 I still work am self employed building contractor, can't afford to give up, not been able to work since Nov due to this.
