Hi all, I am now 7weeks post op anterior approach THR, doing pretty well back to work, walking mostly without the cane, doing the excercises , still taking pain meds occasionally due to stiffness and soreness especially after work. I have now developed some sharp nerve? pains along the side of my thigh, back of thigh and along side of the incision that I did not feel before...not sure if this is normal healing , anyone else experience this along the way, and comments appreciated...
Hi Kelly,
glad all going well apart from the nerve pains. I am six months post op and still have nerve pains around the incision, mainly underneath. I still can't lie on that side as it is quite painful.
i think in time it should go, hopefully!!!. When you think what a serious operation it is I have heard it can take up to a year for full recovery.
Good luck and I hope things improve quickly.
Best wishes
Margaret.
Hi there. I am just over one year post THR and still experience pain. I thought it was / is nerve pain but have been told by surgeon it is Gluteal Tendinopathy caused by scar tissue. I'm currently waiting for a clinic review where I'll be assessed but it looks like a further operation is required to remove the scar tissue.
I'm sure you'll recover well. Think I was just unlucky.
Regards
Nick
Thanks Margaret, although I am sorry you are also experiencing this same discomfort I am hopeful now that this could possibly go away in time
Sorry to hear that and thanks for sharing...hope all goes well with you too!
Hi Kelly, I have just been to see the consultant, 8 weeks post RTHR. Still needing 1 crutch for short walks and around the house, 2 for longer walks. He said 20% of us still use crutches at 6 weeks and beyond. I have just started swimming, breast stroke arms and doggy paddle legs!! He advised me to cut back on my work to a couple of hours a day, shorten my walks and rest more!! I am going back in 4 weeks for an x ray, as my hip still hurts and I also suffer with those weird nerve pains around the beautifully healed scar. But he thinks I am just doing to much, I guess we all just want to get on with life again.
Good luck
Chris
Ps these forums are brilliant!
Yes , that's exactly it. We all want to get on with life and you are right , I think I might be rushing things a bit ...I am working 40 hours per week (which I don't have an option to scale back) and then trying to also be active on my days off. I think resting more is good advice!😊 Good luck to you too!

Sorry to hear of your pain. Seems to me you should take it easier 😀
If this developed after 7 wks it probably temporary!!!
I had both hips replaced 3 yrs ago. Right Hip did fine ,,of course I had my up & downs with pain !!!
Then left one has never got better so we are going back in to find what's causing pain.
Sounds like you are over working yours as I did on my first one which is fine now !!
My problem hip only happens with probably .01% of cases so I'd bet yours will be fine cause it's still very early in your recovery !!!
luv to all
Best of Luck to ya
David
Hi Kelly: I had that annoying radiating pain on the side from the hip down to the knee for about 1 month. I massage, massage and stretch as much as possible. I think my pain was mostly muscular and also had some tendon , nerve pain since my leg was made longer. It has been 6 months since I had the resection done and as long as I do my exercises, the pain stays away. If I sit too long, the pain is back. So I stretch, walk, do my exercises. The inner healing is what took the most time to heal. I go to the therapy pool and let he jets massage the area and it feels so much better. also rub 535 has become my new friend as I tend to over do it. Life is too short and now there are so many things to do. I am no longer on any pain medications unless it is a reallybad pain and I cannot sleep. Hope this helps.
Has any of yall with nerve pain try cryotherapy. My niece works at one & trys to get me to try !!!
Nick
Be sure to let us know how your surgery turns out. I'm going try it when can find good doc cause I can't stand the pain & the pain meds !!!
David
Thanks David, I will try to rest as much as I can and hopefully you are right and this new pain is only temporary
Hi Claudia, thanks for your info and advice...I think I will try the jets from the whirlpool at the gym, sounds like a good idea!
Hi Kelly, I had nerve damage post op but they didnt realise. My GP put me on Amitryptaline and it cured it. Took around a month but no nerve pain since. I still get the odd pain and stiffness almost 2 years post op. Make sure when you are at work that you are not sitting for too long and do the exercises. I used to do mine at work if I started to stiffen up, luckily, I work in a small office so didnt have a large audience.
Morning Kelly. Welcome to the hip forum! 🤓 Sounds like you are doing quite well!! 7 weeks is still soon after surgery. This pain you're are describing does it bother you with light touch? It could be a number of things. Tendonitis, bursitis... things still healing. I have nerve pain and sensitivity. I too had the anterior surgery as well as the posterior...I dislocated my first hip replacement and had to have a total hip revision 3 weeks later. My problem started about 4/5 months later, and for me it's the sensitivity of anything touching my thigh that bothers me. Even the softest blanket bothers me. It's the cutaneous nerve. It starts just below my first incision and side of thigh. So not sure if it's nerves. Try icing could be swelling going on after a long day at work. I hope it gets better for you. Hugs 🤗 Linda
Thanks, I have a follow up appointment with the surgeon next week and will discusss treatment options? The stiffness wont allow me to sit for too long LOL I do get up and walk during the night @ work...and yes I do some excercises while in there.
Thanks Linda, you are right about the sensitivty, it starts just beside the incision and goes down the side of the thigh...my weird nerve pains come, Ive noticed, when I am walking unaided @ work going to and from, side to side...think I am just overworking the leg..rest seems to help and I do ice after working the long shift.
