Neurosurgeon names for l5/s1 operations please?

hi, my GP would like me to create a list of neurosurgeons names and locations for her to get me a good referral. I'm tempted to ask for the Liverpool centre of excellence.

It doesn't matter where you are, if you have had an L5/s1 op please share your neurosurgeons name please smile

Cardiff: Microdisectomy.

Nuffield: Mr Stuart James,Spinal Surgeon.

I went private although like other he also works for the NHS. I liked his CV showing international experience plus he was a really nice guy. 

I'm fixed, 4 months post op thank you Stuart !

However, you do need an excellent physio and to be a good patient when recovering.

Thank you! I have an excellent physio here, he sees me privately when needed. Used to be my physio when I did athletics. I fully intend to obey everyone when recovering, IF I can ever get the NHS to fix me!

I am getting my op. from a Mr Martin Wilby ( see surgeon list on their website) or another very good surgeon also at Walton is MR Simon Clark - they are the top surgeons for complex spinal surgery.

I've just had my appt today with my consultant at Royal Liverpool - he was 1.5 hrs behind, soent 10 min doing all thw checks that had already been done. Didn't know my medications etc. It was a horrible experience I will be looking for a 2nd opinion - all the pain meds and mri scan results show herniated dic but no neural impingement so injections it is. But i hacve to wait a further 8 weeks, will that be another repetitive consultation? I need to look after my children! Please let me know if you dind anything out. What is the spinal dept in Liverpool you mentioned and where is it?

Hi,

Just noted your location in Liverpool. You are in luck - get referred to The Walton Centre in Liverpool a dedicated Neuro-science centre of excellence. I asked to be referred here (I am living in Ireland) and had my spinal surgery there 2 weeks ago- still recovering but have nothing but praise for the surgical excellence and nursing care. I highly recommend to get reffered to one of the spinal neurosurgeons there.

I will look into that. So can i not ring up myself do i have to have a referral?

It's unlikely they will see you without a GP's referral letter.

Are you currently seeing a Neurosurgeon?

No I saw an orthopaedic specialist yesterday who was running over 1hr15min late. I was in theee 10 min and he dais tgere was no neural impingement - so i asked why with all the meds am i still in pain. He said the rezults of the MRIwere from me lying down but it could be worse when u stand or sit. He has put me forward for nerve root injections but he didnt read my notes at all. I really was fuming. He mentioned my weight and has referred me to a dietician. I know how to diet but cannit exercise and at times cant prepare a meal

I will ask for a 2nd opinion but i'm on my own at these appt so get weepy then i just want to get out of there.

I totally sympahise with you ,I have been through it all as other numerous patients on this site-You are in that awful palce of needing help but no one is progressing it. The solution is stay strong and take things into your own hands as I had to do. I was not happy with my own NHS Nuerosurgeon as asked specifically for the Walton Centre for a 2nd Opinion (you have this right but GP's will not tell you this).

Other consideration, should you be seeing a Neurosurgeon and Not a Ortopedic surgeon (2 different skill sets) do you have any nerve related symptoms with your condition, if so you need referring to a Neurosurgeon.
