Wend - this is where we all start and you are not a pain. Drs are clueless but you will get all the help you need here. The only way I know calorific value and fat value is by reading my Collins Calorie Counter which gives you more information than you will ever need. (Older readers will be sick of me telling folk how to know the values!!) Also I repeat, here on the forum we have someone called RR who has been an inspiration to many of us and you should read all her posts to get all the relevant information about what to do. On the Memberlist type in RR and then click on RR (think it's over on the left hand side) to read all her posts.

I, and I believe others n here, use nutriscales of some sort. You weigh your food and put a code in for the food and the scales tell you the fat, protein, carbohydrate, potassium etc etc. I got mine from Lloyds pharmacy for about £12 but there are various ones on the market.
Take a pill with every meal unless the meal is fat free (according to the makers - but personally I have never had a fat free meal unless you count 3 cups of coffee in a row).

Hi, I am trying out this Food Focus and it is great. It is a good way of keeping a record of what you have eaten, excercise taken and works out my predicted weight loss.
