I really hope that someone who has been through the same experiences as me is able to help me. I know that it says that this is a forum to share experiences but I’m really concerned and getting scared.
About 3 months ago now I woke up over couple of nights with chronic acid heartburn. This is something that I have never suffered before so thought it was ‘just a one off’. About 2 weeks after my attack I found that I was suffering with swallowing problems it felt as though something was stuck in my throat I felt that I needed to cough to clear it but it didn’t. Someone suggested that I take Gaviscon Advance which I did for 2 weeks but didn’t help.
I went to see my GP who prescribed me with x28 30mg Lansoprazole. I was told that if I was still suffering after this then to return to see her. Which I was so I booked another appointment but it was to see another Doctor as it was over the Christmas Period and my original GP was on holiday. The other Doctor prescribed me other dose of Lansoprazole and referred me to the ENT Department as I was still suffering with swallowing problems.
Over the Christmas period my symptoms seemed to ease slightly I even managed a few alcoholic drinks and felt fine.
I had my appointment at the ENT Clinic just over a week ago now, the Consultant put a long tube with a small camera attached up my nose to view my larynx which he said looked healthy (thank goodness). He said if I continued with problems then to ask my GP to refer me for an Endoscopy.
Well it’s certainly is playing me up at the moment. Every night I have to sit upright in bed, as it feels even worse if I attempt to lie down. Every morning I’m waking up with a really dry throat. I can feel a slight pain in my throat. During a day the swallowing problems have returned. I’ve never suffered any heartburn since the first initial attack about 3 months ago but the other symptoms are making themselves present.
I’m not massively overweight maybe just a stone or so, I’m not a healthy eater but I am from today I can’t carry on like this so I will definitely change my diet if that will help. Another hurdle is that we are trying for a family at the moment so I’m reluctant to take too many drugs.
Any help or advice would be appreciated thank you.
Yeah its called Globus Hystericus, ask your GP to refer you for that endoscopy, its only a 15 minute thing and youll be able to see for yourself whats going on
Would 'Globus Hystericus' cause me all the problems that I am having? My GP said that is was probably reflux started from the indian takeaway that I had over 3 months ago? The Lansoprazole doesn't help I had one yesterday and last night I felt worse then ever. Then this morning I had to get up at 5.30am due to the lumpy feeling and extreme dryness in my throat.
It eases when I am drinking or eating a meal, but then not long afterwards it starts up again it feels as though I have a tablet stuck right at the back of my throat. I'm find myself swallowing all day long to try and ease it. I've just eaten an apple which I hate as someone said that they can help with reflux/GERD but it hasn't it's still there.
A few years ago a family memeber had narrowing of the gullet which had to be 'stretched'. A family friend has just been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus after suffering from reflux for many years so you can imagine my concerns.
I'm going to phone Doctors first thing tomorrow morning to get another appointment, it's really getting me down.
Globus Hystericus is all the feeling a lump in the throat stuff, its what its called when they cant find a cause for it. One of lansoprazoles side effects is a exceedingly dry mouth, tongue and throat
I will not bother anymore with the lansoprazole not that they are doing any good anyway. I stopped taking them over Christmas and felt better whilst I was off them.
I'll still go ahead with getting my GP to refer me for an endoscopy as you say it's only 15 minutes for piece of mind.
When I had my appointment at the ENT Clinic the Consultant who did the camera through my nose to check my larynx said to only take the medication if I really needed to. I wasn't taking them over Christmas and I felt ok?
My throat is burning at the moment and only does that when I've taken Lansoprazole at first I thought it was the Gaviscon but not taken that recently. It's a feeling of having to clear my throat all the time. I'm sick of having to sleep sat up when I can sleep that is.
I worry myself to death and I'm getting stressed with it all which of course makes it worse. I've been reading on the net and it says that Oesophagus cancer starts with problems with swallowing like something been stuck in the throat. I know I shouldn't read too much information but I can't help it.
Ah I see, yeah well theres no need to take it, just take it for a few days if the reflux comes back (or whatever your Doctors say). Oesophageal cancer generally happens further down closer to the stomach, you will / should of felt quite ill for a while if you had that
Just back from the Dcotors she said that it sounds like muscle spasms in my neck/throat on the lines of what you said.
She has given me 10mg 0f Metoclopramide to take 3 times a day for 2 weeks then I have an appointment to go back and see her if still causing me problems then she will refer me for the dreaded Endoscopy.
Metoclopramide, I wouldnt mind some of that myself  I dunno about this muscle spasm thing but hey it sounds benign :D Yeah if you are still scared go for the gastroscopy, you dont fancy that? It isnt that bad
Just been back to the Doctors last week as it's not gone away as I type I can't swallow. I went to see another Doctor who has referred me to the GI Department my appointment is in June so it looks like I won't be escaping that dreaded Endoscopy
Oh well best to get checked out isn't it as it has been going on now for months.
These are very much like my symptoms, except the only time i get relief is when i go to bed, but as soon as i get up in the morning and have a cup of tea and a biscuit its there well it feels like its there i spend all day trying to get this lump to go, i have pains where it feels like a lump of food is going down but there is nothing there i have had endoscopy, which said i had small hiatus hernia and acid reflux showed up on my barium swallow but the doctors didnt seem to want to give me anything i had to keep on at them i also lost 2 stone in weight where i just didnt want to eat so it was when i went and seen an ENT specialist that he said it was classic symptoms of acid reflux he put camara up nose and said it was slighty swollen so i suppose that is what makes it feel like a boulder in your throat i take 40mg of omeprozale and gaviscon after every meal but this gives no releif at all the ENT specialist said that i could have an operation so am considering at moment it does seem like its quite good and i couldnt put up with this for rest of my life it really gets me down
same here but my lump is more like trapped air in my throat, i have to try and clear the air myself, by burping, it was worse three years ago, but now i only get it once a weak, after i changed my diet and exercise a bit more,
It's funny that you say that the only time you get relief is when you go to bed, I find this worse for me when I lay down. I have put books under my bedposts to heighten the head of my bed, although I don't honestly think that it is making a real difference. I the same as you felt that medication didn't really help. I at the moment don't take anything. I haven't suffered anymore heartburn only a few week ago after a chocolate binge
At ENT the Consultant did say it sounds like reflux and suggested going back to my GP to be referred for an Endoscopy so I have my appointment looming next month, but reading other posts it'll just be a case of yes it's reflux take some more medication. I don't really want to be taking anything at the moment though as we are trying for a baby.
Can I ask what's the operation that you have been offered?
[quote:d1eaaf5b1e=\"ginger\"]same here but my lump is more like trapped air in my throat, i have to try and clear the air myself, by burping, it was worse three years ago, but now i only get it once a weak, after i changed my diet and exercise a bit more,
That is good that it has improved for you. I have changed my diet as I want to lose some weight before our holidays anyway so hopeing that this will help. I do a lot of walking already most days. I find myself swallowing all day long to see if 'it's still there'. I don't burp a lot really, only sometimes when I stand from been laid down, it's more fustrating then anything isn't it.
Been reading your experiences, my god they are so similar to mine! the only thing is, i also have multiple gallstones! dont know whether my pain is the acid reflux or gallstones. Every day i worry and fear the attacks, i just cant take it anymore, feel like all my strength and energy has gone and im just a walking shell in pain all the time. I was worried about taking so many medicines so i ordered a natural remedy (some kind of alkaline clay) off the net, im hoping to god it works, its bad enough having acid reflux, but even worse having both that and gallstone pain! anyone with gallstones and acid reflux? :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?
Hi all, i have the same problems but i was actually hospitalised, i went in with severe abdominal pain which they still dont actually know the cause of.
I had a laproscopy (keyhole surgery into my stomach) and they found nothing, in the next couple of days (when i came off my period) they went in again and still found nothing, i then had an ultrasound scan they found nothing, i had a chest and abdo X-ray they found nothing i then had the camera down my throat, which if ayone knows they are having ask for sedation!!!!! and thats when they noticed my Oesophageal sphincter was abnormally large.
I was then allowed to go home with a large dose of pain killers, Domperidone and Omeprazole.
I had my follow up with the hospital where i went in for a MRI scan to see if they could diagnose the abdo pain which they couldnt but they did diagnose me with Oesophagitis.
I was advised to 100% cut out smoking, with the allowance of nicotine patches, gum ect, also 100% cut out fizzy drinks, alcohol and caffine. I have to wait 6 months to see if that has worked if not they will operate to reduce the size of my Oesophageal sphincter.
My syptoms also included vommiting, to the point where i was loosing a dangerous amount of weight, extremly painful heartburn, and extremly painful abdo pain...
I would advise anyone who i could to go and see your GP if you have any of the syptoms in my post or any other posts cos it is a really serious case, also try to cut out cafine fizzy drinks alcohol or smoking out of your lifestyle which i know it is alot to ask anyone but its only for the greater good of yourself, i would just say maybe do not cut them all out at the same time, im 18 and i live of cafine and ciggarettes so i know its not easy but i woudl at least say try and give it a go if its going to help us
Hi It is very difficult when you have several conditions as to knowing what is causing what. I am 62 years old and have for most of my adult life known that I had digestive problems. Gradually over the last few years I have been able to eat less and less. Things came to a head about 2 years ago when I started to get a severe pain in my chest. Things progressed to back pains, vomitting and a loss of 4 stones. I was referred to a gastro man who arranged (lucklily for me) an unltra sound scan on my gallbladder and a camera investigation. The scan showed gallstones and the camera showed a hiatus hernia and 4 cm segment of Barrett's. I very rarely got acid in the mouth but did get creamy tastes.
I had previously been put on Lameprasole but the hospital changed me to Omeprazole. I had my gallbladder out on the 25th April and I was found to have huge to small stones in and embedded in the gallbladder. I have to have regular visits for check up for the hiatus etc and will have to have the camera again in a years time. Recovery has been rocky but I feel better than I did. The weight is stable but I am still unable to eat a decent main meal and I am trying to introduce foods back into my diet. I have vomitted twice since the op.
Eating is an issue with these conditions. The advice throughout this forum is to watch what you eat however difficult and boring that can be. It is better than the pain.
Keep to low fat produce, red meat may be a problem, no fizzy or fruit juices, no citrus fruits, alcohol, chocolate. Some people cannot tolerate salad or fruit. Eat as early in the evening as you can. Have your last drink about 2 hours before bed. It's a real drag but there does not seem to be an easy answer. There does seem to be a lot of people suffering and maybe some clever person will come up with an answer.
Read the advice on the gallstones thread. I felt the support was invaluable throughout.
Hi - am going through the same as you. Initial severe heartburn attack but now left with acid taste, indigestion and nausea. Am going to see the doctor next week but reading your post made me calmer. Hopem you are sorted now.
