New hip just installed

Hi All,

I have had a rather bad time this year. Jan 29th I walked the dog 5 miles, cycled 50 or so miles with our club, and went to bed.

The next morning, I couldn't walk and the pain was terrible.

A&E, GP,  etc etc excuse excuse for two months and a ton of painkillers. The GP said "I guess we'll have to fix the addiction after we cure the (unknown) problem.

Finally, after waiting ages to see a physio, the one I saw looked at me in horror and told me to go home, call an ambulance and refuse to budge until seeing an orthopaedic Dr.

Two week wait for exploratory surgery and hip biopsy and then 6 weeks on IV antibiotics. I had had a rare bacteria that had caused septic arthritis and destroyed my hip in about one month. the ball was gone and the socket pitted. More like a stick in a bucket than ball and socket.

Anyway, end of a long story is that I had a hip replacement a week back. I am feeling great and all the pain is gone. Just a little local bruising. As for the copious amounts of adictive medicines.....they're all stopped without problem.

Very aware of the "dont do's" but am getting on with the exercises. The day after the op the physio had me walk the corridors and climb stairs. He signed me off for release and I just had to wait for microbiology to confirm there was no remaining infection.

Best Wishes to all and I hope you're enjoying your new hips as much as I am.

Mike

Yikes Mike. Some gp's have their head in the sand. Glad you are on the mend

I am so glad to read of your good results after all that you went through. Good luck with continued excellent recovery.

Very well done. With your positive attitude I'm sure your recovery will be swift.

Cheers Richard

I work in microbiology, did they give your pet bacteria a name?

Yes, they did. It was haemophilous B. Most likely entered via an ear infection. Apparently a common destination is to cause meningitis.

They called it rare because most adults have a spleen to help remove it, and apparently it doesn't usually find its way to major body joints. Once it does, it can work very quickly.

Unfortunately I have another issue that resulted in splenectomy. I have been vaccinated against it but that apparently didnt help. Kids nowadays are immunised against it.

6 weeks of antibiotics did the job....IV for a while, requiring a stay in hospital.

Mike.

Yes we used to grow quite a few from children each year till they started the vaccination programme. Haemophilus influenza serotype B, commonly known as HIB. Nasty beast. Glad you are recovered
