New Medication

I have recently been diagnosed with Graves’ disease  - My Thyroid extremely overactive @66% - I have been taking Carbimazole two tablets 3 times a day. But this is making me have gastroenteritis and mouth Ulcers. My GP now wants to try me on Propylthiouracil - has any one taken this before and how did it work for them

Many Thanks

Laurren,

I have not tried Prophythiouracil but I know if you add L-Carnitine to your treatment medications that you will be able to reduce the amount of meds you have to take and it will help normalize your thyroid levels faster.  I know that if you have to take either drug at a high dose that you will have side effects so by adding the Carnitine and being able to reduce the dose you will feel better sooner.

I have been on propylthiouracil for the last 3 years. I was on 4 X 50mg daily for a year, and now tapered down slowly to alternate days of 1 X 50mg and 100 X 50mg. I was worried initially as doctors warn of liver problems on this med so i used to get regular LFT's done. Now I check LFT's once every 6 months or if I get a sore throat, ulcers or upper gastric pain. It has kept my thyroid within normal range but I still feel like hell and my thyroid doesn't seem to want to stop making excess amounts of T3 and T4.  I was allergic to carbimazole came out in hives which is why I was put on PTU. No problems with it so far.

Thanks for your help ladies - has anyone has the Radio Iodine Treatement?

I have been told that with this disease and medication that your hair can really thin and you put on a lot of weight?
