Hi about 2 weeks i suffered my first anxiety attack at first i thought it was something more serious as I have never had them before but after having numerous tests and ECG blood tests everything has came back normal I have had a week off work due to not be able to relax and feeling fed up on Monday I was taken into hospital by ambulance and had a another ECG blood test and a chest x-ray and all results were normal and I was told it was anxiety I did not call the ambulance I spoke to my healthcare provider who sent the ambulance based on my symptoms. I spoke to a mental health worker today who has prescribed me sertraline brand is Pfizer anybody has ever taken that brand I've I'm a bit concerned about the side effects i was told it can take a few weeks for it to kick in but side effects can happen straight away i was prescribed them due to feeling fed up, not being able to concentrate and not sleeping very well and always thinking the worse can happen like next anxiety attack maybe a heart attack or when will the next one happen im a 32 year old male if you have had side effects what were they, have they made you feel better thanks
i’m sorry you are going through this. First of all just so you know, anxiety symptoms are not harmful. you will not have a heart attack even though the symptoms can feel scary. Most of the symptoms of anxiety are due to adrenaline that’s released during anxiety or even when you feel OK. The adrenaline wears off eventually.
it does it take the medication about 4 to 6 weeks to really kick in. The reason I hesitate to share side effects with anyone is because once you read them and find out some side effects then you start anticipating them which makes you even more anxious. you can even cause a side effect to occur by thinking too much about it. It might not even be a regular side effect of that medication! When I start a new medication I don’t even look at the side effects and it actually is much better that way. None of the side effects are so horrible that you won’t be able to stand it.
give The medication a chance and time to work. Any side effects eventually wear off. When your body gets used to it.
Also,
think about what in your life is causing you anxiety and stress. I highly recommend that you have regular sessions with a counselor because first of all it feels great to vent to somebody else and secondly they have the tools to help you manage this better so you feel better. You can do virtual sessions which is what I do and it works great! you see, it’s not the symptoms of anxiety that are the problem, it’s the unmanaged anxiety that actually causes the symptoms.
and this is very important…… Try as much as you can to stay out of your head! Overthinking, worrying, etc. is the worst thing that we can do with anxiety. What it does is that it actually gets a hold of your mind and then all your thoughts automatically go to the negative . it’s like a merry-go-round and you have to break that cycle! I am listening to a great audiobook that the author says to GET out of your head and into your life! I’ve learned so much from this audiobook. There’s also great talks on anxiety on YouTube. One of them is called the anxiety guy. he also says don’t believe everything you think which is very true because most of our anxious thoughts are not based on facts or reality , they are based on fear. Don’t let them control you. Do things that make you laugh and smile even if you have the feeling of anxiety. Do you things that relax your mind. Remember, you are not your anxiety or your thoughts. I do hope you feel better soon! We are here for you. ![]()
People can give their personal opinions but personally i do not think anybody can tell you what will happen to you if you take the medication. Have more faith in your mental health team. Mine was great for me, they saw me for 4 years. The best thing you can do is try the medications, there is a high chance you will not experience side effects. Side effects increase with higher dosages.
