i have been suffering from TN for years on and off, but have been suffering for 6 months this time and have been formally diagnosed again after a long period of remission. I am on Gabapentin now, as the Tegtatol made me so sleepy and fuzzy headed it was adding to my inability to run my business. I am now suffering regular bouts of sever pain with bad pain in between. I'm seeing my dr yet again on Tuesday would you recommend me asking to be refrred to a neuropathic specialist? I am seeing a chiropractor too but this is causing me even more intense pain. All advice recommended!
Hi Louisa, Just from what I read of your description my advice would be to see a neurologist. You could probably increase the dosage of Gabapentin and maybe combine it with another Med. If you have Typical TN - the electric shock pains - then there are surgeries to deal with this if the meds do not work and then you would see a neurosurgeon. I had Balloon Compression which is an out-patient surgery and fairly simple to do which worked immediately. It is usually not permament but can be repeated after several years
. Good luck!!
Hi Windy thank you for your reply that gives me hope. I will push to see a neurologist as the drugs are giving very little relief. Thank you again.
You are very welcome. Ask me again about TN if you want my thoughts. I was diagnosed 4 years ago so I can at least tell you what I have read or experienced. It is very rare that solutions to this problem are not eventually found for people with this condition.
I agree with Windy. Seeing a Neurologist is essential as they have more knowledge of the drugs and other information which you need
Thank you Valkrie. I intend to tell my GP that I want a referral, when I see him Tuesday. It is just good knowing there are others out there who have been through the same thing
I was first diagnosed about 6 years ago, but it went off and then didn't re occur until late last year, I think it was a descale at the dentist that triggered this bout. I was experiencing days without pain when it first reoccurred, but the last 3 to 4 months it has been constant and the pain level is increasing despite the Gabapentin. I intend to tell my GP that I want a referral to a neurologist when I see him Tuesday. It is just good knowing there are others out there who have been through the same thing and found a treatment that works for them.
