Hi

I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on what is the best time of day to take citalopram. I have been on 20mg for a week now first thing in the morning I feel quite sick and a little spaced out in the mornings, the upset tummy seems to be settling down now, feeling quite low in the mornings but as the day goes on I do start to feel better in myself. I am due to go back to see the doctor in a weeks time is it likely she will increase the dose?

Hi Jan

Welcome to the site, you will find alot of good info, help & support here I know I have and it's nice to feel that your not on your own. I personally went from 20mg - 30mg and felt better (most of the time anyway). I take mine first thing in the morning and feel that's best for me. It's a bit trial & error, I suppose you have to find what suits you best.

Take care & good luck with the Dr.

Best wishes Nicky Jane x

Hi Jan and welcome.

I started taking mine at 4pm in the afternoon, then tried it at night. Then I started taking it in the morning! Now I'm trying it at lunchtime!!!!

Play around with it until you get it right for YOU!

I have been on 10 mg - 3rd week this week. Doctor was going to increase it after 2 weeks but because I was suffering the majority of the side effects especially the nervousness and sense of fear she has left me at 10 mg for another 2 weeks.

I think the effects are subsiding now, but at the same time - other than the inability to sleep - I don't feel I need to have the dose increased as I am starting to feel 'okay'. Having said that - after 2 weeks of feeling crap because of the side effects - I think I am bound to be feeling better lol.

Experiment with the times of day you take your tablet until you find one that suits you. I was going to go back to night times but was worried that having been taking it in the morning - waiting until the following night to go back to then would be too long a gap between doses. I took one yesterday after my lunch - I didn't feel as drained come evening and also felt more relaxed at bedtime (not that it helped me sleep - but hey - one step at a time).

I did intend to take it an hour later today than yesterday but as it seemed to work at lunchtime yesterday - I'm going to stick to that time again today and see how I go.

I think it is a matter of finding out what suits you. On my packet it says morning or night - neither seem to work for me - does it really matter what time we take it as long as it is at the same time each day?

Thank you for replying and your advice,

I think I will have to do as you've suggested and try a different time of day for a few days and see how I feel.

I have been taking Nytol to help me sleep at night for quite a while now, I take it about half hour before I want to go to bed and they really do seem to help. I told the doctor I was taking them and she said to keep taking them with the citalopram.

I have tried Nytol, Kalms and Kalm sleep. They work the first night but after that I might aswell take a blue smartie!

I ordered some herbal tablets from America and they have arrived today - they look and smell disgusting but desperate times cause for desperate measures and will be trying them tonight.

They are called Great Night Sleep. We shall see lol.

I keep getting that too Melbi. I have to go away and come back a few minutes later and try again.

I'm sorry, we are aware of this error. It is intermittent although I think it is getting worse. Please bear with us why we try to deal with it.
