Newbie to Herpes and freaking out at 45

Wow, where to start?? I had multiple partners from age 20 to 34 until I got married. We were together for 10 years until we divorced. I have been dating some e new for 6 months. I had what I thought was a yeast infection or possible bladder infection. Went to the gyno and was diagnosed with the bacterial yeast infection and given a Rx. Got worse over the weekend with severe burning when urinating, ultimate sign for me having a b bladder infection or UTI. Went back to gyno Mon and nurse practitioner looked and said she didn't see any blisters. Urine culture came back negative so I was referred to urologist. They did catheter for a 'clean catch' and was examined and told I had weak pelvic floor muscles and would need PT. Went back to gyno where they did a swab and dr. even said he seriously doubted it was herpes just because I didnt have blisters. Results came back positive for Herpes type 1. I was in shock (still am!!) Never thought I'd get anything like this. My boyfriend said he's never had any blisters or classic symptoms od herpes, however, he does have cold sores usually once a year. I didn't know you could get genital herpes from someone with a cold sore although it makes sense having oral sex with someone with a cold sore. I did recall a previous boyfriend who had herpes but never had an outbreak while we dated and he took Valtrex everyday (this was back around 2002). Ive been reading info left and right and am going for a blood test this afternoon. My bf doesn't have ins and I had no idea the test was going to cost $100-$200. Dr. said he wouldn't see me for a question/answer meeting until results came back from blood test. Can't believe I was so careless all those years (and now). So glad I discovered this website/forum!! I'll be reading a lot of others' discussions and questions. Bottom line, it can happen to anyone. One other thing, one particular day I had very noticeable joint pain and didn't know what was up with that. Another sign of a first outbreak. I have learned quite a bit in just a short time. The fact that once you get herpes, you will always have it. That sucks 😥

Hi there. Do not feel like you were "careless" during those years. Many of us do not know we have HSV, let alone our partner having it. It is very common not to show any symptoms of HSV, some never show it at all. The most difficult part of it, I think, is the acceptance after the confirmation. Do not worry, we are here for you. Today is my official week joining here and I have felt so much better about having HSV.

Thanks for your reply (the only one I got)! Testing confirms I have Herpes I but not Herpes II. Still learning lots but the only thing I can figure is I got the outbreak "down there" from oral but from what I understand, it's very rare that happens. So not sure if oral is something to stay away from all the time or just if a cold sore is present (which I don't remember his having one in the first place) and if I do have another outbreak, if it will always break out below the belt rolleyes Thank you so much for responding. I'm glad for this website although the bf was not pleased as I guess he thought I'd joined a talk support forum and was afraid I was putting my business 'out there'.

Well everything here is up to your discretion. He should not be worried about putting your business out there because you really aren't doing that. Also, sharing what you are going through is a step in learning to accept and live with what we have. I am happy that you want to learn more about HSV and ways to live with it. I have learned so much from being on here. Also, just an advice, always communicate with you primary physician for advice about the diagnosis.
