Newbie with fibroid

Hi ladies,

I have recently been diagnosed with a 20 week size fibroid. After putting up with painful heavy periods for a good few years- just put it down to getting older as I'm 40 yoa.

Weirdly my pain and heaviness lasts just a 2 or 3 days out of 5. That doesn't seem much as I've read that some poor ladies are having heavy prolonged bleeding, lasting for a lot longer.

However my hb is fairly low 8.3 so I have started on iron tabs.

The gynae has referred me to have a chat with radiologist about possible embolisation- although not quite sure how I feel about that... the other option was hysterectomy but he has said the timing of that would be symptom related and at the mo they don't seem too bad.

Am I just putting off the inevitable?

What d'ya reckon girls?

Hi amanda, do you know the size of the fybroid?

Hi Kim

Think its around 10cm.

Really weird can feel it really clearly around my belly button when I need to pee. When the bladder is empty I can feel it lower down on the right.

Hi Amanda,

I have just had a hysterectomy due to fibroids, and my simple answer to you is no I don't think you're just putting off the inevitable.

If you only have 1 fibroid and your symptoms are not that severe I would say go with the embolisation.

The only reason I went for the hysterectomy was because I had no other option, I had tried everything else but I had several large fibroids, the largest was grapefruit size sat in my Cervix which they had to remove during the hysterectomy. They were giving me very severe symptoms including constant bleeding (no let up at all for the 12 months prior to the final op), flooding (not sure if you've experience this at all? Not everyone does), pain....excruciating pain like giving birth day in day out. I used to get pain during intercourse but due to the constant bleeding that ceased for nearly 18 months, good job I have an understanding partner

It wasn't until after my hysterectomy that I realised just how ill I had been and I'm dumbfounded at how I coped for so long. My symptoms started 10 years ago but it took them 8 years to finally make a solid diagnosis of fibroids. BUT if you can avoid major surgery like a hysterectomy then I would say do so.

Wishing you all the best for the future,

Sam
