Hi

I was just diagnosed with Angle Closure Glaucoma when being fitted for a new glasses prescription.

However the optometrist did not reccomend any treatment and just said .." we will see you in 2 years" my vision and pressure was good he said.

I would think I should follow up closer with an opthalmologist. Any thoughts?

Hi Howard,

I was told I had above normal pressures in 1990 by an optemetrist.    I saw a specialsit in London who agreed, but just kept me under regular observation, and it was seven years before I was started on eydrops.     Now, I am 73 and still on eyedrops, but with excellent vision.     I would recommend you see a specialist as soon as possible because you will be no worse off than you are now, and it removes a lot of worry.      The specialist really put my mind at ease!

I agree that you shoud be followed up more frequently.

Have you got an ophthalmologistin  your area? They are medically qualified and more  experienced than Optometrists.

As your optometrist exactly what your pressures were.   Are you in UK? If so you are entitled to a free eye test if you have been told you have glaucoma,so as the others have said, 6 monthly tests would be a good idea.  Angle closure glaucoma can need urgent treatment more often than open angle glaucoma so if your eyesight becomes blurry,or seems not quite right,dont hesitate to seek urgent help.

I trained as a nurse and also worked at an eye hospital.

Quite honestly as your optometrist has given you bad advice I would query the diagnosis and seek a second opinion. {ersonally I would get a  referral to an ophthalmologist or go to the eye walk in clinic at any eye hospital. Your eyesight is precious  and a price can never be put on it.

Howard I am unsure if you have read my last response so rather than chance that you have not I decided to repeat it.

I trained as a nurse and have worked in a couple of eye hospitals.

Your eyesight is very precious.

I am concerned that you may have received the wrong diagnosis from your optometrist as the advice given to you was not in your best interests at all.

Did the optometrist give you anything in writing to confirm  his/her diagnosis? Whytell you to wait two years ? Why not refer you to the opthalmologist for assessment and treatment?.

Please tryto get a referral asap to ensure the correcdiagnosis , monitoring and treatment.

I personally would seek a second opinion from a experienced ophthalmologist as a matter of urgency. I would not wait for other symptoms to occurr.

I am completley on board with what you are saying. I have put a call into the doctor that made the diagnosis and I am awaiting his reply. Thank you so much for the invaluable reply!

Did you see a dr or an optometrist? Either way you were ill advised.

​I would bypass the dr/optometrist and seek a second opinion from the ophthalmologist.

​Are you in the UK? There is Moorfields eye hospital  in London, Manchester Royal eye hospital, Manchester.

You can walk in their emergency eye casualty which is based at thee Manchester eye hospital or Moorfields if u are in London.

There are other eye hospitals with similar srvices, this cuts out the middle man as u can self refer by just walking into their emergency eye clinics without an appointment.
