Can anyone give me a bit of advice. I have been troubled with IBS for years and have now been diagnosed with diverticulisis following a barium x-ray. I get horrible stabbing pains in LHS and sickly feeling. Is this normal without any infection and how long can it go on for. I have changed to a high fibre diet, can anyone recommend anything else. I did have blood tests which did not show any infection I presume or doc would have put me on antibiotics wouldn't he.
i was diagnosed with diverticulitus in 2003 aged 40. I have to say that it is very unpleasant when the infection kicks in, the only i cure it is to go to the GP and get strong anti biotiotics - metrodiazonales (after a couple of days these do work). When i was first diagnosed i went on a high fibre diet but found that this at times made the condition far worse as it seemed to bloat me up, now i have a weetabix daily and try to eat brown bread. I also find that certain foods do cause more pain (try to avoid rice, tomatoe seeds, strawberry seeds as these get stuck in the pouches of the bowel and will cause infection). I also try to drink Actimel each day as i find these do settle the tum (also, go to the healthy food store and get some tablets for the digestive system, these are called something like acydaphlis tablets). I do sumpathise with you as the pain on the left hand side is so uncomfortable especially when you walk around. you can also buy Buscapan tablets from the tablet to calm the spasms down (i usually try these first before i resort to the anti biotics). Unfortunately it is a very miserable condition with no cure.
