just wondering if anyone else still has the bunion there even after their bunion ectomy ?! I still have a very bony bone there !
Yes I have...my bunion was quite large causing it to protrude outwards
on the side of the foot and upwards on top of the foot....kind of a dorsal
type. It doesn't stick out to the side much now but is still very visual on
top of the foot now that the swelling has pretty much stopped I notice it more. I'm 18 weeks pre op.
I thought there would be no bump there and am thinking it probably wasn't worth all the pain I have been through and still going through, still very painful when moving the toe, it seems to want to defy me during excercises !
Like wise the thought of all the pain and discomfort only to have
a foot looking pretty much like if did pre op really pips me off...
My toes were sore and painful to move so I was not using my
foot properly and not walking from heel to toe in case if hurt
more. I visted a podiatrist on Monday and she held my foot and wiggled my toes She did say that they felt as they were tight to
move told me to put a book under my foot with my toes on the
edge and scrunch them up...pushing against the edge for 30
seconds at a time....tried this but it's just as easy to hold leg out and scrunch my toes up..... It really has made a difference to my
walking as I now can bend my toes when I walk and have very
little pain when I wiggle my toes. I have to go back to the
surgeon next month and will mention the dorsel bunion...not
sure anything can be done and certainly don't want another op.
Absolutely the same! my op was 12th December so about the same time, however, I think for those of us who have had 'Frodo's Feet' which is what I've called mine for a long time, we are expecting immediate results and the swelling in the bone also has to go down. My surgeon did say on the 13th Feb that it was a little lumpy but I think he meant the scar so I am just watching and waiting.
Oh dear ! I've just started using Sudocrem for the scar, excellent stuff !
I'm seeing my consultant early April but am seeing my own doctor next week, I did think the bump would have completely gone 😔
My scar is really neat although a little sensitive to touch but the Arnica cream is good for that, Sudocream always was great for the kids when they were young too.
Having had my big toe across at a 45 degree angle for so many years I am pleased with the current result although there is now an angled space between my second toe and big toe but the surgeon said that would start to straighten if I taped it to the big toe or used a toe spacer............just delighted not to have an ugly bunion but the recovery for us all will take longer than we perhaps expected. I have it all to go through again in September with the other foot but at least I know what to expect! Be patient all, in a few weeks when we are wearing summer sandals we will be very happy!
Oh no, not your other foot too ?! I'm trying to wear wide boots and pumps, and yes it really is such a slow process !
Hi Terri66
Yes I still have bumps after surgery. I am 4 and a half months post op.
I was very worried and concerned before I was getting discharged but was dismissed all the same.
To cut a long story short I was referred back to the surgeon who did my op and he wouldn't have any of it. He said that was the best he could do with my feet and that my feet would never be straight.
Anyway decided to look for another surgeon and had a 2nd opinion just last week and gosh I was soooo relieved when he said there was something he could do.
I'd already asked my old surgeon whether or not he could do this procedure and he had said no so don't listen to anything anybody says. If you think there's something wrong or not proper done then make sure you ask questions and seek further advice.
But it's still early days yet for you. Might be just swelling but that's what they said to me. Deep down I knew it wasn't but see how you get on.
Can I just ask what procedure did you have done?
Hi. Just wondering about what he consultant said when you had the second opinion? What did he say that he would be able to do? I seem to have more if a bump now than when I first had the dressings removed. I also seem to have a problem with hammer toe which was pinned but is still bit lying flat and in fact seems to be getting worse and is now starting to rub on shoes. I had op on 8 th Oct so am also 4 and a half months post op. I have an appointment with surgeon in April but am considering ringing to ask if it can be brought forward
Hi Karen27130
Yeh I felt the same. I had more bumps the second time round I had dressings removed than the first time.
I had a scarf osteotomy done. This surgeon said he would be able to the akin osteotomy too.
I genuinely believe that the first surgeon should have done scarf akin procedure in the first place. Now he probably doesn't want to admit it.
I was told on my first visit that the X-ray showed I have arthritis in the toe, perhaps that why it didn't take, but originally the consultant was in two minds about straightening the toe along with the bunion removal ... Really disappointing to go through so much pain and still end up with a bump !
Do you know which procedure you've had done?
All Ive been told by the consultant is just a bunion ectomy, I'm seeing the consultant beginning of April.
Thanks for that. I was really happy for the first few weeks but over the last few weeks I have had more niggles with my foot and I m sure that it is looking worse. It is nowhere near as bad as before I had it done. I am really pleased that I had taken photos of feet the day before surgery which act as a great reminder! I had A MICA procedure on both feet. Had Akin procedure. The left foot is much better than the right. Think that I will ask to see surgeon earlier. Just tried on a new pair of M and S wide fit pumps and the right one hurts! They will have to go back! Nothing new there! Have you got a date for your new procedure? What will the recovery period be? Good luck with it
The surgeon advised me not to have anything done yet. To think about it until it has been 12 months. He said things might change because full recovery process is 12 months.
I asked him that after then if I still wanted it doing would he be able to do it. He said yes. He was going to write to my gp. I probably have to be referred again nearer the time. I might start the process after August to get things going really because it takes a while for appointments to start coming through.
So not got a date set yet. But at least I have hope right now😊
Hi Terri66
Sorry I did try to reply earlier but it wouldn't go through.
Yeah it is a bunionectomy but the different procedures have different names.
Mine was a scarf osteotomy. Some people have a lapidus procedure. Some have a scarf and akin osteotomy done together. It all depends on the foot or feet how bad it is.
Personally I think I should have had a scarf akin done but the surgeon just did the scarf osteotomy.
Maybe if I had that done I wouldn't be going through it all again😡
As far as I know I had no screws, not sure if the bone was broke but do know that the nerve was cut .... I'm best not knowing !!
