I had a nissen wrap done 5 years ago and since then the acid reflux has vanished. I have, however, had 4 eposides when I awoke with severe pain in my stomach. I'm pretty sure it was caused by food getting stuck somewhere because the pain would subside after a few hours of drinking warm fluids and taking motrin. Two weeks ago it happened again, and once more last weekend. I've had constant pain after each meal and have thus tried ingesting fluids in lieu of solid foods. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Does this mean that the wrap has slipped or that something has come undone?
A Nissen wrap cam loosen or come undone but it usually needs a trauma or specific force to do so.
Mine came loose after a few years following 5 hours of violent retching due to norovirus. I had a Collis-Nissen repair. (The Collis part effectively lengthens the oesophagus to provide for a more permanent wrap.)
If it came loose the reflux symptoms you had prior to your fundoplication would gradually return but this sounds like new symptoms? Could it be that food is not passing freely / dysphagia? Or is the food making the stomach which isn't emtying properly?
You need to return to your doctor for investigation - perhaps a barium meal, to see what's happening.
Thanks for the feedback. No, I am only having pain in the stomach. It feels like the pain is coming from the spot the wrap was placed. I've also had a bit of discomfort in my lower right side. But that is minimal. No reflux...yet!
The pain could, of course, be unrelated. Have you been checked for ulcers? I used to be woken up with a band of pain around my stomach. It turned out I had duodenal ulcers caused by the h pylori bacteria. I had the triple meds treatment to knock out the h pylori and my ulcers healed. That was 20 years ago and they have never returned.
