No feeling in my leg 5 days post op

Walked into hospital but didn't walk out.  I had no idea I could be paralyzed. I worried about everything but that!!!!  I am terrified now.  Feeling depressed and overwhelmed.

Hi

Hell, you must be beside yourself. Sooo feel for you, having experience myself.

Have you explained this to the professionals who dealt with you? If so, what was their reaction?

Try to be strong, for the time being and come here for support and understanding.

Thinking of you.

Yes, I told my Surgeon that I had no feeling in my leg from the hip to the ankle.  His response....."Hmmm, thats strange."  Sent me home this way.

That's simply unacceptable.

Where are you?

USA-Missouri   43 year old female

wow.....what did the doctors say !!! please get nack to me.

I'm in UK, so not sure how these things work there. I had same, but happened v suddenly a few days after I came home.

Taken them years to admit it was sciatic nerve damage.

I think you really need to shout out to anyone/everyone. Don't be put off. They tried to dismiss my concerns, saying it was planta fasciitis. Rubbish!

You really need this to be acknowledged and addressed. Do you have anyone who can support you?

They did make it quite clear to me that there were risks with this op, the worse being death. I always prepare for the worst so prepared for that and anything else was a bonus. I couldn't walk before the op though.

Some people on here are saying their leg is numb for a longer period so it could be he's waiting to see if it gets better.

When is your next contact with the hospital ? I would certainly be asking them what is happening and for them to investigate.

Hi Chris, did you have regular THR ??

This is major trauma surgery and you will not be ok overnight. Listen to your consultant and your body and I am sure you will be ok

Yes. We're usually made aware of the risks, but, in my opinion, that doesn't mean to say that, in the event that one happens (short of death), we should simply be dismissed.

I've had years of this sort of treatment and a shrug of the shoulders simply isn't good enough.

There should be contingency practices in place, to deal with this sort of outcome.

I've had 8 years of this and only recently decided 'enough'. I won't be shooed away and patronised any longer.these are OUR bodies. And precious.

Yes jimmy

I guess there are risk when your having major surgery, thats why I am waiting untill I have a very hard time walking before my THR.. Thanks Chris

Yes there are major risks Jimmy though so many people are having this op and the ratio of problems is very low, the success rate is very good. I wish I could have had the op about 6 months earlier as mine deteriorated rapidly and I was in a wheelchair for a month before the op and now still can't walk very far as my unoperated leg is so bad, until I have that operated on I won't be able to walk far however I am better now than I was before this op. They won't usually operate till you've been on loads of painkillers which are no longer controlling the pain. I had no cartilage in my hip which is why they said they would operate, it didn't hurt by that time but wouldn't bear my weight, my other leg had borne the brunt, it was and is still giving me all the pain. The op though is brilliant and I'm amazed at my operated leg I've had no pain in it what so ever and I can put all my weight on it. Don't be scared of the op, if you need it you have it.

Dean,

When I was moved to recovery the nurse asked me if I had any tingling or numbness anywhere. Luckly I didn't. Although it took a week for the spinal to wear off in my leg, I was still able to feel it. I live in the US (NC) and I had to go back for my a two week check up and x-ray to make sure things were moving along ok and to talk about any concerns. If I were you, when you go back, and if you still do not have feeling, I would ask the doctor again. If he does not seem concerned, ask him if you should get a second opinion, since he doesn't have the answers. If he gets p*ssed, tough, your insurance company paid him for his service, he is suppose to be working for you. If he dismisses you. Call your insurance company, just get it on file, get a second opinion from a surgeon that is highly skilled and recommended, then call an attorney, or two until you find one to help you if needed on a contigency basis. I would also call the American Medical Association to report him and file a complaint with the hospital where you had the surgery. Every hospital has a patient advocate.

Hopefully the feeling will come back. If it doesn't you don't have to just accept it. You probably won't have the strength to do all this while trying to recover, so enlist the help of your family and friends.

I am very sorry to hear this has happened to you, or any one.

Take care,

Kathee

Hello love

did you have an epidural or general anaesthetic.

It is normal to feel some numbness after hip surgery what as the specialist said.to you about it as he given any advice or told you how long is it likely to last you do need some answers it's not fair if you are sat there fretting.

All the best
