My wife was diagnosed with hypothyroidism around 10 years ago after she became increasingly lethargic, put on lots of weight and had very low libido. She was prescribed Levothyroxine and has regular tests to check for correct dosage. The medication has had a dramatic effect. She lost weight and no longer suffers with tiredness however her Libido has not changed. If anything it seems to be even worse. We've not had sex in over a year and it was 3 years before that. I've read lots of stories about levothyroxine returning people's libido so I was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems?
It's possible that because Levothyroxin suppresses the pituitary's production of TSH, it's possible that when the TSH is suppressed, other functions are also suppressed. Since the pituitary basically controls the entire endocrine system, suppressing it in any way, can certainly wreak havoc with the reproductive and other functions of the endocrine system.
Mine has yet to return David..good job i have an understanding husband. Its very hard to explain to people without thyroid problems just how much it wrecks your life.Depressed for no reason, depressed cos of the weight gain, depressed cos of exhaustion and constant body ache...hopefully your wife will feel better soon..stupid thyroid effects so many things x
I'm so happy that your wife feels like her old self with the levo, except for the low libido. Perhaps she should ask her doctor to run a hormone panel. This will at least give you's a starting point. I'm not sure how common low libido is with levothyroxine, as I am not experiencing this myself.
