I'm begining to question whether I should go ahead with my RTHR in 2 weeks time as every discussion here seems to be more and more scary. Does anyone have a straightforward recovery without all the complications? There are so many things that can go wrong it seems I'm beginning to wonder if my hip is bad enough for surgery. I don't want to end up in an even worse state

I am SO glad I had the surgery... I wish I could have done it sooner... before surgery I was in pain every day ... it was hard to get in and out of the car, I could only stand a few minutes, I could not walk very far... I am a teacher and it was so hard to get through the day.... I could not work in my garden.... everything was a challenge
now I have NO pain.... recovery takes time and that is okay.... in one more week I can move to two canes and then to one cane and then to no cane! Many of my colleagues have had THR and are so happy they did
It is your decision but I am so glad it did it.... as soon as I woke up from surgery i felt better
trust your instincts....
I have no regrets whatsoever. Yes, there are slight niggles and discomfort but nothing is as bad as the pain I was in and I would do exactly the same if I had to choose again.
Thanks both. It's just that everyone seems to have nerve damage or dropped foot or one leg longer than the other etc. it's freaking me. I'm only 54 and don't want to be on a worse state.
Hi
Ive had THR in April 2014 and my recovery went very well,i felt quite tired but that is normal and soon gets easier as you get stronger.
I did all my exercises and was soon back on my feet.
Im due to have the other hip done on weds.
Recovery is slow, tiring but i don't regret my operation as the pain was unbearable.
This forum has offered me a lifeline of support,. However i only became a member after my operation/recovery i certainly wish i had become a member before.
Hope your operation goes well, here if you need to chat 😊
I had a hip replacement in 2008 because I had an accident and fractured my hip. I was advised to have a hip replacement as the doctors thought that this was the best alternative. I was very scared and knew nothing about hip surgery. The operation went well and I had a successful recovery
I could do everything I could do before the operation. Unfortunately I had to undergo a revision in 2012 because I had a metal on metal implant which was causing problems. These types of implants are no longer used. As you can imagine I was terrified of going through this operation again but I had a very good surgeon and the operation was a complete success. So I would advise anyone who needs to have this operation to go for it. I think it is important to choose your surgeon wisely though.
Thanks
I can say...That I see the same thing as you do quite a few mistakes and moans but then there are a lot of Hip Replacements done all over the place, I am seeing the Specialist here in Blackpool on 23rd Feb for assessment GP says I need it doing yesterday on both sides, I work in a Casino and am standing most of the time and cant walk really at all any more, shuffle about like old Father Time and I tick like a clock too, and it gets worse if you dont get it done, I also am only 54 and still in good shape generaly so am hoping to make a speedy recovery, I will be posing here as I go and will be off work for about 10 weeks that is all the sick time off that I have so will have to plan it with the Specialist around that time frame, I have the bills to pay for and statutory sick pay will certainly not cover the mortgage, worrying times ahead and stormy waters but I am optimistic and want my life back...Watch this space...Kind regards Ian.
Hi Cathrin , are you in wales as your name suggests ? I was 60 last dec . On list for 15 months eventually had it done in neath port talbot hospital on jan 22nd . Whole experience was brilliant can't praise hospital and all staff enough ! I was one of the odd people whose x ray didn't look to bad but I was experiencing pain although not constant . After op the surgeon said my hip had been in a dreadful state , no cartilage left so I was glad I had gone ahead . 3 weeks on I think I am doing well ? Went shopping yesterday and started showering . Walking well on 2 crutches can manage on 1 in kitchen. Doing exercises and walking up and down street . Will be glad to go back to hospital in 3 weeks to confirm I am on mend fingers crossed. I am glad I found this site after my op as it can be off putting. Everyone who had op same day as me seems ok . Hope that helps . Good luck
Hi Mary. No I'm not in Wales I'm in London but I am from North Wales. Yes maybe I should stop using this site till I'm post op. hope you continue to improve. Did you not have a shower for three weeks?
Hi Catrin, I'm nearly 10 weeks post op. had the driest Christmas and New Year ever. But having THR was the best thing. I was driving at 4 weeks. Back to work after 5 and yesterday I did the London thing on the train and 2tubes! No pain, no pain killers any more. After 2 years of not being able to walk around the shops for example, I can see a different future! Do it and improve your life. Cathie x
I didn't shower till my clips were out which was about ten days. Had mine done in Bangor North Wales
Can't have one till staples are out . But I preferred to wait another week to make sure as my wound had been a bit weepy . All fine now . How old are you ?
Wow that sounds good . I have been told I can't drive till after 6 weeks check up .
You can drive if you can do an emergency stop!
Are you in London?
Good old Ysbyty Gwynedd
I'm 54 -just.
Hopefully young enough to get over it well . If I can anyone can . Tall and slim but def not fit . Just do as doc and physio tell you . Good luck and you know where to find me .
I too am only 54, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason..... I am glad I did it and am looking forward to being active again
