No pain relief - pls advise

I am on holiday in Amsterdam. You have to walk everywhere. I forgot to bring pain killers. I need a hip replacement in my left hip ( had my right hip replaced last yr) but have been putting it off.

I am here, no chemists that I can find, the sawing pain in my hip is so bad I can't sleep. There is no possible way to sleep - I have severe pain in the bone and groin..., any suggestions at all beyond calling out an emergency doctor? I have two young children and this will scare them. Could cry with pain - can barely move my leg at all  and am hobbled very badly

Hobbled - Hobbling

Afternoon.  Rose can you possibly get by with otc like Tylenol, Aleve...I'm not sure these are available to you as I'm from the US.  Maybe someone on the forum can provide better ideas.   I'm sorry for your pain.  There not like an urgent care facility you can go to to see if maybe they can prescribe something for you?   I know you don't want to scare your children but if you're in this much pain..... how long are you there for?    I'm sorry i don't have any other suggestions for you.   God's blessings to you that you will get relief.  Hugs ๐Ÿค— Linda

Oh my goodness Rose, you poor thing!! Are you staying in a hotel? If so have considered asking the hotel staff if they have a pharmacy/chemist near by that could provide you with some anti inflammatories and paracetamol  until you are able to see a doctor? Both together will be fine and may give you at least some relief. They must have someone that can help you?  Don't put it off any longer, try and bring yourself to go and get it done  when you get back home!! Take care. Suzie

Are you in hotel or somewhere with a reception you could ask about pharmacy. Which leg is hurting, operated or non operated? Try an ice pack and elevate your leg for a short while. If continues really bad I think you should call doctor. If children are too young to understand they are unlikely to remember much in a few days and sure Dr will ensure they are ok as he treats you. Are you travelling alone? If another adult with uou they could take them out just while Dr is there. Hope you get sonething sorted as pain is nasty enough without being on your holiday

Goodness you are in a spot!  Are you taking Ibuprophen at least? You can buy ice packs and try to raise your leg with a pillow and ice it at night. If you must see a doctor, do they have urgent care there?  They would probably tell you the same though until you are back home, because a hip steroid shot requires a lab with fluoroscopy and usually takes weeks for an appointment for that.  It will keep you out of pain for about 4 months though, but you also cannot have replacement surgery for 4 months after the injection. I wish I knew a better solution for you, I lived with both knees that way and one hip. Had one knee replaced last year and one hip this year. I still have one super painful knee, so I do know what you are going through. I bought these gel ice packs off Amazon but you should be able to find something like them at a pharmacy. Every night elevate that hip and put ice packs on it. Take Ibuprofen as often as it says you can, the higher strength is best. Try to rest or sit sometimes. Good luck, hope the pain eases. I don't know how long you are on vacation, but possibly one day of rest elevating hip and icing it might help too. I did that before my surgery, watching TV to keep my mind off the pain.

Hugs,

Peg

Rose.  That sucks !!

In amsterdam & cant find pain killers.  I would ask hotel staff any friend I make. Even ask consulate of your country what to do.

Best of luck to ya

Hope ya find relief soon

    David

dear rose,

Oh Noooo - you can find over the counter medicine like Paracetamol, Advil, Aleve in supermarkets

Good Lord, I hope you have been able to get some ... so sorry to hear this darling ...

Yes, in Amsterdam one walks a lot and has to be vigilant as well - so many bikes and uneven pavement as well and people ... pushy people (?)

But honestly, they will not help darling and you know that ...

I am so so sorry ...

Just go home darling .... no use being in so much pain and suffering -

And then, when you get home, make that appointment !!!!!

Big warm hug

renee

Sorry Rose. You can buy a bag of Hash and rent a bike.

Seriously, I have felt what you feel. Tylenol.  There are drug stores around. Ask some one where or your hotel.

Watch those 3 million bikes zooming around

Thanks Steve was wondering when someone would suggest this to ๐ŸŒน Rose. Surly there is something even better for her pain there though ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Hoping for ๐ŸŒน Roses' relief

Rose, I answered yesterday but thought of something else. I am in the US so they might not have it there but if you can get some Lidocaine patches you can wear on your hip while out and about. They are available in a slightly lower dose over the counter in the US. Higher doses require a prescription, but the over the counter are not much less lidocaine in them and do work well. You can even cut them to place where the pain is. Since you left on vacation feeling okay, you most likely have just overworked an already bad hip. I still advise the ice packs and sleeping with a pillow under hip to elevate it. If you can possibly stay and rest in your hotel for one day, with using these things and Ibuprophen too as it is an anti-inflammatory, it will probably help a great deal. If you get the inflammation down then take it easier, less walking, use lidocaine patches etc. I am in Nevada and we have medical marijuana. I believe they have that type of shops there. There are a few products that help without getting you high. They are high in or all cbd, very little to no thc. My daughter got me a pain cream of it that works great, it just needs to be applied often. They also have tinctures, drops under the tongue of almost all cbd, if you get much thc you will get high. They help but are not a magic bullet. You will only find these cbd products at pot shops. Get the inflammation down and pain under control and you will feel better. Best of luck,

Peg

I don't know why but my previous reply is still waiting to be moderated. You can google pharmacies in Amsterdam and it gives you a long list. Also emergency doctors. I put the links in my previous response that is awaiting moderation and perhaps that why my post won't show. Hope you have found something by now.

Best Wishes

Ann

Thanks Linda for your kind reply. I am thankfully going home early - today in fact. I can't find anything that takes the pain

away over the counter. I suspect I am reaching the point of not finding anything that will stop it now. Feeling exhausted after so little sleep. Wishing for another hip replacement now!

I have tried the usual pain killers that in the first aid bag we have, but they haven't touched it. I have iced it and that really did help.

I am packing up as desperately need to go home!

Thanks so much Sandra. The one thing the hotel could provide is ice!! So followed your advice and it really helped - definitely thank you.

I am goIng home early. I can barely walk and am hobbling  with the pain. My husband is working here this week so I have both children on my own for 12 hours a day! Not fun

I can't easily keep the children

entertained in a small hotel room for the day, they get very bored and start climbing the walls. Have managed to put a few films on for a few hours respite but overall I can't do it for much longer so thank goodness we are going home! I have an X-ray booked for next week - need to see what is happening - thank you for your reply I feel very alone here

They have lots of coffee shops though! And lovely boutiques! But that doesn't much help me at the moment. It will be okay hobbling home today for an X-ray!

Yes you are so right. Describing it perfectly!!

You have to walk absolutely everywhere...and trying not to get run over by the zilllion bikes, trams and cars with two kids has been fun ๐Ÿ˜Meanwhile hobbling over the uneven pavements and cobblesvtrying to stay up right! The vondel park is huge and very easy to forget how long you have been walking for... Amazing city though, so pretty, if you don't need a hip replacement soonish I would imagine it the perfect city!

Renee I am finally going home, and am booking the appointment . My hip and leg are throbbing as we speak and that is after resting in bed all night supposedly. I have been awake for most of it! Knackered beyond words. Now need to navigate the airport...

I was breathing in clouds of hash just walking around!! Was wondering if it would help... decided it wasn't responsible with two little girls.. so opted for room service wine to dull the pain!

Never seen so many bikes in my life! Not sure I am brave enough to ride one - it is hardcore cycling - not sure I have the nerves of steel required!!

Thank you Ann. The hotel kindly offered to call a dr, I think they thought I had been injured opposed to just hobbling with a sore hip. Due to my age no one ever imagines I need a hip replacement.

I feel quite vulnerable with my girls, so heading home. Icing worked well, so good to know for the future, as you can always find ice anywhere in the world ( mostly) and am going home to see my consultant asap
