No pain till night

i have no pain until i get in bed them my foot and leg kills me any advise

How long has it been since your surgery? I found going through the exercise routines at night when i got in bed to be very helpful with the muscle pain at night

two weeks hun x

Ah! It was like that for me, and my family laughed when I said “as soon as the sun goes down my leg gets painful”.
For me it only lasted as long as I had compression stockings on - so the first 6 weeks.

i dont have them my consultant dont belive in them its driving me mad xx

It is possible it wasn’t the stockings … but that is how long it lasted for me.
Very odd that whenever the sun went down, it started, and was OK after sunrise next morning.

Have you tired elevating your leg and ankle? Use some pillows.

I am less than a week post op and also found that on my first night home my hip, leg and foot became painful in bed. I found that the pain disappeared if I placed a rolled up towel under my knee. I guess the weight of the leg was pulling the new hip joint downwards. Painful nerve impulses in my foot also disappeared when I carried out the foot rotation exercise.

The foot/ankle rotations make a big difference for recovery. After my surgery, I made sure that I did it multiple times a day.

I am six months out of bilateral hip replacement. Feel wonderful all day and can out walk my husband now! I experience some discomfort in my left hip after I am sleeping for about 5 hours. Some nights it is painful. When I get up and start moving - no more pain. Have any of you experienced this?

Hi Debbie, this is exactly what I have experienced. I am now 2 weeks post op but up to ten days I was needing very little pain med during the day but at night my knee down to my foot were really aching. I just couldn’t get them comfortable and being someone that cannot sleep on my back wasn’t helping the problem. Two weeks on I have just managed to find three pillows in a pile behind my back/head and one pillow under my thighs the best combination. The pain at night has also subsided and I find a couple of Paracetamol at bed time do the job to get me to sleep comfortably. Mid way through the night I sometimes need another couple of paracetamol. I am not one for taking tablets but in this case I think being a hero isnt helping me.

Debbie, if you do a lot of activity during the day … then yes you may have pain & soreness at night. Pain meds. A huge amount of recovery is tied to taking pain meds so we can keep moving and not get demoralized … I also ice when I’m particularly sore …I’m four months into my new hip.
