No physio still

Hello I had a hip replacment 11 days ago and had a letter today to tell me I am starting physio in couple of weeks I feel like it's a long time to wait did anyone else have to wait that long to start physio ? I am keen to get better and to be walking and I feel like this is putting my recovery back

Hi yes it does seem a long time I am on the waiting list now but Iam going to a physio pre class before my op been told I will have physio next day. Hope they are right hope you go on alright with it all best

Hello Jessica:

welcome new hippie. I am in Canada so may be different but rest assured that I had a similar situation. Had physio in the hospital right away in 2nd and 3rd day after op. Had a booklet and handout given to me with exercises to start at home from physio dept.

i went to my doctor about a week later to get staples removed. He advised me to start the physio 2 weeks later as he felt that I would not be ready to do the physiotherapy right away. Anyway it has all worked out-I am on week 9.5 post surgery. Today is a good day.

best of luck to you in your recovery.

Cathy

Hi Jessica, I had my op on 8th June & my Physio starts next Weds 29th exactly 3 weeks later. I asked why the time gap & they said all we want you to do are your exercises whilst the 'inside' mends a little. I suppose you've got to give all your muscles etc. a little time to recover before you start putting yourself through the hard slog of Physio. The last thing my surgeon said to me 'walking is the best exercise you can do following THR, little & often' x

Ihad my first physio sessionon day 15 - see my blog on my website.

It does seem a long time to wait - might be worth pushing for something earlier.

Best wishes

Graham

Hi. Not sure if u r in the U.K. - but I had to wait almost 4 weeks for my first physio and then when she came she was useless and didn't give me anymore exercises than the ones I was discharged with - she just took my criutch away and replaced with a stick. I'm at 8 weeks and still haven't seen her since . I have had to google exercises to help my glutes as she never told me that all my glutes are weak and until I strengthen them I will continue waddling. Self motivation is the key and your new hip and body wil tell you when your doing too much - look online at exercises as I found them so beneficial - since the physio service were so useless. Good luck

hi jessica,

warm welcome to this friendly forum of hippies in all stages of this journey -

I also had physical therapy in the hospital on 2nd day post-op _ In Holland a physical therapist is in place prior your surgery -

Not such a great experience for me as they put me through an exercise program that was way too heavy for me at that time - I was in a lot of pain and had to stop the PT sessions - I wish I had not started PT right away but waited until more healing had taken place -

of course you are eager to move on, so was I, but instead it has put me back -

Unless, of course, you get a physical therapist who is specialized and knowledgable in post-op THR patients ----

well, this my personal experience - as it is said here many time, we all heal different -

11 days is still early in recovery from such a major surgery -

be gentle with yourself - do your exercises, go for little walks and listen to your body, darling ...

all is well

big warm hug

renee

I'm 18 weeks now.  The only physio I had was the exercises given in hospital and a call at 3 weeks, nothing else.,maybe your the same.

Whoops, your getting yours later

Thanks everyone feel better now knowing I'm not the only one who had to wait that long

I am in the UK btw x

Hi Lynn:

that really is too bad that you have had no follow up. How are you doing at week 18 after doing your exercises and post op on your own?

Do you find that your mobility or range of motion is better than pre op?

Hey that's terrible I can't believe you have been left like that how r u doing ? I have only been doing the few exercises in the booklet I was given because most of them say don't do them untill a physio therapist says so, so I haven't been doing any stand up ones just the bed ones which I'm pretty good at now

X

Hi

Had op on May 25th. Sent out of hospital with a booklet. No mention of seeing anyone! I'm just using my sense. Is it essential to see a PT?

You could download exercises from a reputable hospital - something like RNOH Stanmore in UK.

Hi Margaret: welcome to the he healing hippies forum. It seems like many people manage on their own doing exercises they were given and doing self management.

I found it to be quite surprising and disheartening that other than the exercise books and handouts I was given, follow up was up to me. I initiated an appointment with the family doctor 6 weeks after surgery as I was anxious and worried that my symptoms might be a hip dislocation. X ray showed I was fine. . The physio is helpful in giving me exercises that are directed at strengthening my glute  and getting over my limping and unbalanced gait. He also provides info and assurance that I am on track or identifying that aches pains I have are normal fir post op. So for me physio is also to allay my anxiety and worry along the way as this seems to be just as challenging to deal with as the hip recovering. In my province of B.C., only 3 sessions of physio are covered by govt. I am paying for the extra few sessionbiweekly therapy out of pocket.

good luck in your recovery and do what is right fir you

I was never offered Physio in fact my surgeon said I did not need it.  However because I have overdone things my doctor has referred me to physio. I am 11 weeks post op

I'm day 9 post op and I haven't heard about any physio - in fact I don't recall being told anything about expecting physio at the hospital either.

How does it usually work?

I think different Health Authorities give you different entitlements. Are you in the UK? I am on the Isle of Wight and had to chase my own physio, after being told by the mainland hospital that I was entitled to some. I found I was allowed three NHS funded sessions.if any more were needed, I would have to go back to my doctor. My first appointment was at 2 weeks and last was at 7 weeks. You could check with your GP as to how you can access some sessions .

I live in West Sussex.  I suspect you're probably right and it depends on your local Health Authority.

I'm seeing a nurse at my doctor's surgery next week and my doctor the week after, so I will mention about seeing a physio then.

Apart from next day Physio in hospital and every day until going home (4 days).  Given exercises to do several times a day.  I had to go back to hospital 2 weeks later to be given more exercises and a further appointment for 2 weeks after that.  I will now start weekly Hip Class until discharge.  I didn't feel that I should have had more progressive physio any earlier but have diligently carried out my exercises building up strength gradually.  I am 4 weeks post op and have started walking with 1 crutch 1 week ago outside/inside and furniture walking.  Good luck!
