Non weight bearing after having total hip replacement

Hi it has been two weeks since I had my RTHR any advice as the next four weeks are to be non  weight bearing?

Hi ...I had mine done back in February and also could not  weight bear for 6 weeks due to femur slight crack at the top which was wired. It was frustrating but you absolutely MUST do what your surgeon has said. I was on two crutches for 6 weeks and although I started to use just  one, the physio and then the surgeon said to ditch it altogether as it makes you lean to one side. Do the exercises, swimming pool helps ..I had 4 weeks hydrotherapy first then physio gave me pool exercises to do. It was all totally worth it as I now wouldnt even know I'd had it done....10000% recovered...good luck!! Where are you?

Non weight bearing that's interesting.

Got me just 12 hrs post up I was gotten up to walk them by wheel chair to PT to actual do exercises.lol

I was on two crutches for 4 weeks, gradually weaning down to one in the house, two outside and then one outside and then a walking stick (mainly for security).  You should do everything your surgeon has recommended and not try to run before you can walk!  It's hard but worth it in the end.

I really did follow the non weight bearing rule and to an extent I still follow it today.

All this really meant to me practically was, carrying grocieries in a sack with handles, I carried grocieries in my left hand (THR was on the right side).

Today if I have 2 sacks of groceries to carry up the flight of stairs to my front door, I still carry the heavy bag in my left hand (non operated side). I hae never really put a lot of weight carrying weight on that oepratated side. Why test fate is my thinking, LOL!

Like Crissy I recovered beautifully. Oh sure the first month WAS Hell what with the raised toilet seat and the sleeping (or more accuratly !Not sleeping) but if you can tough that out that first month the far far majority of us come out really glad we did it, and with a great quality of life.

Hi

Why is it non weight bearing? some particular reason?

I had the 6 weeks of restrictions which were hard especially sleeping on my back

But if thats what you have been told follow the instructions and you will heal much quicker

Depending on the surgical procedure (and/or complications, such as Kgc1962's femur fracture), I think the concern is not to dislocate the prothesis. I had minimal-invasive anterior surgery and had no weight bearing or sleep position limitations, but with the lateral or posterior approach, muscles and tendons are cut and must heal before you have an infrastructure that will keep everything in place. As everyone has mentioned, it is important to do what the surgeon and physical therapy folks tell you. My mother-in-law had the lateral approach total hip replacement at 90, and she made a complete recovery by working the program. Continued good recovery to you!

Hi

Thanks for that

I dont even know what I had  LOL

The scar runs down the outside of my leg?

I had the usual 6 weeks restrictions {in the UK} 90 degree angle ETC but weight bearing from the day of surgery.

I didnt have any physio as such.....was given a sheet of paper when I left the hospital 2 day post op and told to "do thoseeek" Was sown once in the hospital how to do them and that was it.

I did follow them the best I could at home

My first one was almost 5 years ago and the second one was almost a year ago {last Jan}
