Just wondering if anyone else who is/was none weight bearing has any tips on protecting hands as they get so sore from the crutches. I've been told to put all my weight on the crutches rather than good leg. Thought about weight training gloves or bandages, any ideas?
I was non weight bearing for around 6mths, I managed to find some padded grips on eBay.
Tennis sweat bands provide a cushion, and has helped - I hope it will help. I wrapped then around a few times x
When i was last on crutches my dad put the foamy stuff you put around pipes on my handles to help my hands. It was from b&q. Really helped
Hi
I ended up putting foam lagging for pipes on mine and it worked really well. You can get this from places like B &Q.
Good luck.

6 months! Gosh I thought 3 months was bad enough! I'm worried my op leg (which has always been a little slimmer than my other leg) will wither away. How was your recovery?
Not a reply, but what do you and others mean by weight bearing or non. As I and my fellow hippies were standing on operated leg day after op, with aid of cruches.
Good idea, thanks Rose. Good luck with your hubby going back to work!
Thanks Sarah, I have blisters so that would help!
Gloves helped me, but I only found it necessary when I had
one crutch, then I quickly moved to a cane.
I don't want to interfere, but are you putting too much force on
your hand? Is it possible you are walking too speedily?

Thanks Sarah, Going to ask my hubby to nip and get something.
Just seen we put the same!! 😀
I had a complicated op with bone grafting from doner bone, and pins to hold in place. 3 months none weight bearing to allow to heal. Desperate to put op leg down and sometimes forget and do so but haven't put any weight on it.
It's hard work hopping!!
Sarahs must think the same haha. Creepy 😂
Thanks Cathie, I'm not weight bearing on op leg (holding it up) and was initially putting my weight on my good leg but that hurt my good hip. Physio have advised me to put the weight on my arms (luckily they are strong from weight training). It's really hard work!
Weightbearing ( to me ) is when the full weight is on
the new hip, or on the unoperated hip, without crutch or
cane, or chair or other support.
Consultants say, after your op, 'Your hip is weightbearing',
or even 'fully weightbearing'...I think they mean that it is
possible to put weight on it, not that now you should put
full weight on it, because the muscles play such an important
supporting role and they take up to 12 months to fully grow again.

I put sheepskin but didn't really help x
I won't lie it was slow and frustrating but I'm now 20 mths on and I take no pain relief at all so all worth it in the end. Good luck
I think you have very special circumstances, how is your good hip
holding up? Did your consultant give you any specific advice?
I think there are crutches which use your underarms for extra support.

My other hips is normal, I was born with congenital hip dysplasia which was picked up when I was 6. I had a few ops as a child but then had arthritis in my late 30's, early 40's, which gradually got worse. Originally thought the op would be a standard THR but a CT scan showed badly a deformed socket and femur.
The pain is nothing like it was before already!
My consultant just said not to weight bear and I had input from Physio. My leg is back to the length it was when I was younger and I can't wait to put it down and stand up straight 😃
