Was putting on face cream last nite and saw my neck looked lopsided Felt thyroid and noticed lump on left side of thyrroid. Have been on synthroid 0.075mg for abt 15 yrs for hypo. Past several months loosing hair need to sleep a lot eating litlle but have gained over 20 lbs in less than 2 months Have had hard time swallowing and food and drink get stuck until I cough a ton to clear it Also have been getting food caught to the point of choking!! Am on vit b12 monthly inj Willlook into vit d supplement My Dad had his thyroid removed in his 50's for multiple nodules on his thyroid-some pre-cancerous. Any suggestions? I have an appt with my gp tomorrow Howdo I approach this with him? He thinks women look for illness-but he is a good dr Thanks for any help!

Explain that you're worried because you've found a lump and tell him about the family history. If he says it's nothing to worry about, say you'd really like to get it checked by a specialist.
Also it sounds like you've got underactive symptoms - tell him your symptoms and ask for a blood test to get your levels checked.
Lumps can be called nodules and they can be benign or cancerous. The good thing is most tend to be benign. If it is getting troublesome and you feel that you are choking, it could be growing in size. However, It is best to have an ultrasound (not painful at all), to see what is happening and then a biopsy if it needs to. Please have it checked -call your GP or Endo and have them schedule the test. If you do have a family history, it is helpful to let the doctor know. I have 3 nodules and all were benign. In some cases the nodules can be surgically removed. I hope this helps.
