Numbness and dizziness for 2 weeks

Hi all,

I've had what the subject line says, and it's bugging me quite a bit. I can't focus on things and I feel like I can't walk in a straight line because of the dizziness. My tongue and upper legs seem to be the worst-affected bits by the numbness but both my arms are affected too. I've read MS has those symptoms, but I had an MRI for unrelated reasons on 6th October and nothing came up on that. The symptoms started suddenly on 18th October. I've been back and forth to the doctor about it, and I also had an (apparently unrelated) bout of gastroenteritis (diagnosed by the hospital) from last Monday to Wednesday, which distracted me from things for a bit. What should I do?

p.s. I'm type 1 diabetic and have been diagnosed with transformed migraines.

I'm not sure about the numbness on your tongue but supposedly anxiety can cause numbness and tingling and dizziness, I have been told that's what I have, although I feel like my ears are making matters worse, another person on here told me about rescue remedy that is supposed to help with anxiety, the only other possible cause I could think of is a pinched nerve, but at least u know its not ms from the scan u had

Thanks... Anxiety is a possibility, as I have been anxious lately. I've just never had these symptoms before, so it's quite odd.

Diabetes can affect the nerves and lead to numbness, particularly in the legs. Migraines can affect the nerves full stop and could help explain the tongue numbness. It may well be worth asking for a referral to a neurologist (a nerve specialist who deals with migraines and other neurological disorders).

I haven't had the numbness and tingling before all of my health issues started and I started worrying every single day about it, but I agree go see a neurologist to rule out nerve damage

Hi, I'm seeing a neurologist at the moment anyway about my daily headaches, so I'll raise the issue with him when I next see him. Would be good if I could get two issues sorted out at once!

What are they saying about ur headaches because I have daily migraine, they get so bad it almost drops me to my knees

He said they were "transformed migraines plus tension-type headaches", and recommended upping my dose of Epilim to 4 times what it was when I was first put on it. They're still being problematic but I think the Epilim helps a bit.

What are transformed migraines? And do they know what is causing them?

This explains it better than I could: http://www.headaches.org/education/Headache_Topic_Sheets/Transformed_Migraine

Unfortunately they don't know what the cause is, but it apparently sometimes happens if you've got a history of migraine.

Sorry, looks like the link I put in has to be moderated - it was a description of what transformed migraines are, as I didn't think I'd be very good at describing them myself! Basically they're migraines that occur regularly (often daily) and can sometimes be indistinguishable from ordinary headaches.

Hi Charlotte,

I haven't had the numbness with my tongue, but my legs and arms for sure. My legs are so weak that they tremble all day. I have the migraines everyday as well, may be due to the anxiety and stress from it all. My neck hurts and is stiff all the time. I also have horrible gastro intestinal problems everyday, sometimes I want to go to the ER because I am bent over with spastic spasms and pain thru the stomach and colon. I too have been scared of MS because of all the symptoms I have, but I had a MRI done too and they said nothing was on there. Yay for that, but still very frustrated how I can have SO many  sypmtoms and everything seems to be dominoing into another one. I just want to feel NORMAL again.

Hi Brenda, it's funny you should mention stomach and colon pain - I've been admitted to hospital twice in the last year with abdominal pain, but they failed to find anything. They presumed it was gallstones in the first instance and gastroenteritis in the second. I wonder if it's the same thing? Anyway, I hope you feel better eventually. I get weak arms and legs too and have fallen over a couple of times with them... I wonder what it is.
