Numbness and drowsiness

Does anyone else experience a numbness around the mouth and teeth with Citalopram, a bit like you've had an anaesthetic at the dentist?

I'm also really struggling with drowsiness. I stooped feeling depressed, so I have gradually gone down from 40mg to 20mg, but after 5 months on 20 mg, I still feel drowsy. Am trying to slowly reduce to 10mg now but am too scared to come off completely, as I have had 3 breakdowns and don't want another one. My home life is also very stressful so don't feel able to come off.

Any advice?

Hi Mary,  I can't say that I have, but I have only been on the 20 mg since the beginning.  When do you take your pills...a.m./p.m.?  Myself, and a friend of mine...both take cital 20 mg, and both of our doctors told us to take our meds 30 minutes before bed with a little food.  Neither of us has had any problems with sleeping, feeling the foggy head, upset tummy, little to no daytime anxiety, or feeling tired during the day, that others have had.  Maybe stay on the 20 for a little longer and try taking at night...if you want to give it a try...and see how that does.  But check with your doctor, and then give the slowly going down to 10 a chance and see how you do.

I have been on it for 3 years, and have lots of stress, that's why I am still on it...I too am afraid to go off.  I see my doc every 6 months, and she has not asked me if I want to go off of the med, just asks me how I am doing.  After finding this forum, I see others seem to go off after a while, and I have been wondering if I should too.  Just too scared...if it ain't broke...you know?  LOL  I think I would check with your doctor first though.  Maybe give taking at night too...my friend and I have not had problems with being tired during the day, and both had trouble sleeping, and now sleep so much better at night.

Thanks for your reply. Glad you're getting on so well with citalopram. I wouldn't come off if you are under a lot of stress. I take mine at night and feel drowsy until just before it's time to take the next one the following night! My doctor is happy for me to try reducing, so I think I will try to slowly move down to 10mg. Would be too scared to come off though.

YW...I am scared to go off too.  Yes, maybe it would be better for you to slowly move to 10mg.  If you do well there, that would be great!  Keep me posted, I would love to know how you do!  I might just give it a try too!

I will do 😊. I've been managing the reduction by alternating 10 mg one night and 20mg the next. After doing this for about a week, I've just had my first day in ages of not struggling with drowsiness! Will carry on like this for a few more weeks before dropping to 10mg. Good luck šŸ€
