I had a RTHR nearly 4weeks ago and think im recovering ok. I have found the upper part of both legs feel quite numb, at the the front thigh. I get a sensation of tingling and pins and needles, especially at night. It's not bothering me particularly (though sometimes the tingling can be 'sharp' and then it is painful) but wondered if anyone had experienced similar? Im guessing it could be nerves repairing themselves, feels very strange.
Really grateful for the information I have found on this site

Sounds pretty normal Barbara . I am 10 weeks post op today and still have some muscle tightness in thigh but it is getting better with the exercises .
good luck

Hi Barbara, I am also 4 weeks post and have the exact same sensation, it seems to get worse for me at bed time and have trouble getting to sleep. I called my surgeon and he told me to increase my potassium intake, I take a potassium supliment daily and eat bananas, some orange juices and energy drinks too. I followed this up and it did help, the pins and needles are pretty much gone, just have numbness and tight muscle feeling. Hope this helps you out.
I had pins and needles for a few months after but it does go eventually....a bit of massaging helps with oil or moisturiser too
Thanks for that. I was going to mention it next time I was at the Physio, but will certainly try potassium rich foods. can't do any harm!
I was starting to worry I had nerve damage that may not rectify but thanks to replies likely not the case.
Best wishes
Barbara
Thank you. I have found massaging oil in eases it, possibly encouraging circulation.
Will try eating chocolate over Easter as well........worth a try
Wonderful idea , they should put chocolate on prescription for all Hippies . Funny they haven't mentioned it in the tv debate tonight , they would get my vote ha ha
When reading your original post, it really got my attention cause I was worried too, having the same trouble as you, glad my surgeon helped me out. I read about potassium on internet and it is good for muscles, thats why athletes drink energy drinks high in potassium. all the best to you, your not alone.
I think you can get chocolate flavoured massage oil...now that definitely might help!!!
Think it may help the partners more tho .
Now you're talking!!! Will put that on my shopping list.
knew that would lower the tone!!!
Good to know there are other hippies out there. First couple of weeks after my op I felt incredibly vulnerable. I hadn't realised what a major op it would be. Spent my time planning for being off work, filling the freezer and buying sensible shoes and baggy trousers! Didn't really stop to think how completely zonked I would be. But no regrets at all, and reading all these posts has been so so helpful.
Thank you everyone
Chocolate hip replacement maybe x
Hi Barbara,
My right leg, not the surgery one, gets pins and needles too and numbness. Comes and goes. Sometimes it hurts like restless leg syndrome and causes some pain. Taking Gabapentin 600 mg and Cyclobenzaprine 5 mg seems to take care of it.
It is a lot of Gabapentin, but it helps me. My surgeon mentioned that my nerves were very sensitive. The muscle relaxed helps me too.
Thanks Dawn. Interesting you have it in the unoperated leg, which is where mine is mainly. That's what confused me as couldn't work out why that should be. Think there must be lots going on nerve and muscle wise as everything heals and settles.
Best wishes
From one Barbara to another, if you don't like chocolate (!!??) you can always try the healthier option of bananas, they have lots of potassium, you see tennis players eating them during matches, you may become a good tennis player too!
Hi Barbara (good name don't you think?)
Will try bananas, is there potassium in chocolate or am I clutching at straws?
Best wishes
...think its called wishful thinking...but bananas in chocolate sauce? ...Works for me!!
Now there's a thought...melted chocolate with a banana dip....
