Numbness on side of knee and around heal of foot

I am 10 weeks TKR and have a feeling of numbness, tightness and tingling to the right side of my operated knee.  Also I get a numb tingly feeling around the lower heal of my foot on operated leg.  Does anyone else have this sensation.  It does not hurt but is annoying.  My foot first felt numb and tingly after the op but the nurse said it was the nerves and that it would go in time. Just wondered how long it may persist for.  Other than this I have not had much pain for the last couple of weeks and finally I am more or less sleeping through the night, saying that no doubt tonight I will be awake for tempting fate.

Maggie I have just had me second knee done first one few years ago now.   I still have numb area on first knee but small price to pay for the pain which  is no longer there. Now starting the long road once again to recovery.  Take care jackie

Hi Maggie

Numbness on outside of the knee is normal and will continue for quite a while.  I didn't have a numb heel...just an ache at the front of my ankle with my 2nd knee in Sept.

Hi maggie im 12 weeks TKR tom and nearly all the left side of my TNR was numb but gradually the feeling is coming back. When I get into bed the underneath of my foot goes numb so like you I guess it is the nerves playing up!!!! My cons said I may be left with small areas of numbness but it could take upto 12 months for the nerves to be back to normal so I guess wel just have to hang in there. Happy Sleeping tonight by the way!!!!!

I am 10 weeks PO and still have numbness but not in the foot...it is nerves and I still have a numb area on my left knee from TKR 8 years ago.

Hi,

i am 4 weeks tkr. And noticed 2 small toes have those sensations also I notice after excercise my leg is heavy and I have a sense for a short time of my foot feeling numb but soon "comes back".

i am reassured by reading all the posts that this is part of the journey.

I'm at nineteen weeks, and still have the numbess on the outside of the knee, and the feet. . both feet, strangely!  so I think it may be something to do with the spinal anaesthesia.  But numbness is very normal and lots of TKR patients have it.  I tink it is about the last thing to go if it does, but in some cases it can be permanent apparently.  I think I notice a bit of feeling on the outside of my knee though, and before there was absolutely none at all . . so sounds good!  Hope yours soon comes back to life!

I had it until about 12 weeks and still do occasionally find that massage helps.

Hi Maggie,

I am 8 months post TKR and one side of my knee is still numb. I asked my surgeon and he said, very offhandedly that he had cut through the nerves and that it will always be numb.

They messed up on my spinal block and I ended up having a general aneathstic, my u operated leg is still numb on the outside of my shin.

Trying to remember whether I had this or not. I had TKR 3 years ago so can't really recall.

All I can say is that whatever it is like now it does get better I promise and is well worth what you are going through now.

Hi Maggie, I have had great results from Osteopaths.  Luckily I live near an University who run clinics for their yr 4th & 5th yr students. They are supervised by professional Osteopaths who teach & mentor the students. I had bilateral knees & came through really well until it was time to live by myself.  Then obviously I did too much & went backwards quickly.  After 2 osteo treatments I am walking up & down stairs properly, walking without a limp & highly recommend osteo's rather than physios. I do not want to put physios down as I had a great physio in Rehab for 9 days. Ohers leave a lot to be desired. Be aware, & inform yourself.

Good luck & inform yourself as much as possible. which this what this site is all about.
