Official Gym Bunny 🐰

Well it's official I'm a fully fledged gym bunny.  Can't quite believe it myself as I was a lazy cow pre-op.  Maybe they replaced a part of my brain during surgery. You hear about people's personalities changing after accidents and I'm still not drinking white wine which I used to get through gallons of.  I'm not teetotal - I just changed the colour of the grape 🍷

I usually go one morning a week and at least one afternoon but will be increasing this since I found out I'm allowed to froggy swim - so happy 🐸. OK I'm not the quickest swimmer and if approached in the sea by a Great White wouldn't even bother to try and swim away BUT I have done 20 lengths without stopping and the only pain was in my hands where I must have muscles that have laid dormant for many years.

So I go on treadmill for a fast walk for ten mins followed by the bike for 10 mins and then it's the arm cycling thingy for three mins and 12 Ab reps on the Swiss ball followed by 16 lengths of the pool which is 1/4 of a mile.  I felt like I had done a triathlon before work this morning.  Yes I was a bit stiff today but not hip pain.  More down to my hypermobility issues where my muscles are tight but weak.

Got my follow up soon with my personal trainer to go over measurements, lung capacity, heart rate etc again to compare.  I don't think I'm any different but it will be interesting to find out.

I am in fact going to sign up after my three months free membership expires - much to the shock of friends and family.  I may even put a swimming cozzie on my Christmas list as everyone else has sporty black plain ones and I stick out like a sore thumb in my pink floral halterneck !  It's good to be different though 👙. At least I'm no longer Plimsole Girl after investing not a lot of money in some actual trainers 👟

So my operation not only replaced my hip but it gave me a get up and go that I thought had got up and gone years ago.  I'm loving it 🐰 Gym Bunny and proud.

PS - it's really just an excuse to eat cake 🍰😉

PPS - as you can see it's not helping with sleep ( up since six and it's 3am) !

PPPS - if I can do it anyone can 👍🏼

I started swimming and exercising in a pool as soon as he told me I had to lose weight to get a new hip. I lost 20 pounds first month and dropped three sizes. I am so happy that all my blood tests showed normal on everything and with just the 20 pound loss. I am doing the total hip replacement of my left hip on the 22nd and excited to finally get this over with!!!  Good job on the exercising in the pool especially nothing better. As soon as I get a release to get back in the water from my hip surgeon and my eye dr (having glaucoma surgery Dec 19th) I will be joining the YMCA they have an awesome gym and pool!!!  Gotta love water!

Yeah for you Sarah.Im paying for a gym membership through my insurance.,but can't use. It due to fractured femur.Im supposed to get my 2 hip done at the end of the month.Hoping to get back to working out. This immobility is killing md.I also quite smoking.I unfortunately have regained about 25 lbs over the months

hi sarah,

you go girl !!!!   take advantage of this  change in whatever part of your body -- it might have been there, dormant like you said, all your life ...

big warm hug .... well done

Well done Sarah how long since your op did you start going to gym?

Thanks Sarah. I'm getting nervous but excited at the same time. Your post really helps. All the best. Mary

Im afraid to start working out again. Almost 12 weeks po. When did you start to work out??

Hi Sarah

Well done to you, you put me to shame.  I think I am a bit older than you, I'm just 70 years old.  It's nearly 10 months since my left hip replacement and I still don't seem to have much energy.

It takes me all my time to walk, but that is all I can do.  I manage between 4-7,000 steps a day and once I reached 10,500, that is an achievement to me.

I wondered whether to join a gym for the treadmill and cycling. I'm not a very good swimmer and can't ride a bike, I lack confidence.

I know you have had problems but congratulations to you for recovering so well.

All the best and good luck Brenda C

Well I'm 42 and I had my Hip Op on 14th July and started my Gym sessions 21st September so 10 weeks post op.  I don't do anything too strenuous - the Treadmill is walking (fast walking though) and slightly uphill, the bike is a good pace but I don't push too much & I swim fairly slowly.  We also walk most Sundays & I have increased to about 3.5 miles - yes it aches a bit but it's not pain.

Thanks for all the comments - I wanted to post to inspire others.  If I can do it really anyone can but remember we are all different & heal at different rates depending on how fit we were beforehand and the type of surgery (I had Posterior).

I am loving it though & actually look forward to a session, especially the swimming.

Well done you! I had my op 5 days after you, and I'm doing ok, cycling to work is much more comfortable now! I'm interested in your swimming. I tried a few lengths when I was about 8 weeks. I'm no good at crawl, I do breast stroke, but I was worried about the keg kick, so I tried breast stroke arms with up and down kicking, but it wasn't v successful! Is your surgeon ok with frog leg kicks?

That's great news for you, my wife says I should

be in top shape in no time because I get enough

exercise just pushing my luck lol. I have renamed

the bathroom the gym so I can tell my friends

that I go to the gym first thing every morning, she said that

something has happened to my brain and thinks

I may have fallen out of the bed at the hospital and hit my head.

Keep up the good work and remember to laugh every day

I think it helps.
