Old and Lonely Need Friends

Hello I am new here and wonder if there are older, lonely people who would "chat" to me.  I find the days too long, although I do try to occupy myself.

Good Afternoon Anne

I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling "lonely". This, as you know, is a growing problem and there are many contributing factors, not least of which is the way of life and sense of community that you will have witnessed a dramatic change in during your lifetime.

The problem has been highlighted in the press and other media recently, and without distracting from your plight, it is mostly men that are affected. Loneliness of itself is unpleasant at any age, but of course it has knock on effects too.

How close are you to your children and grandchildren? Have they moved away to a distant location, or are they within driving distance? Do you maintain contact with them or is everybody leading their own lives?

Let us know a little background, but don't reveal any personal information in the process.

Best wishes.  :-)

Hi Anne

I'm not 'older', but happy to chat. We all get lonely when depression overwhelms us. In my case is loneliness among people.

If you'd like to chat give us a shout.

Take care and hope you feel happier soon

Jo

Hi Anne, I'm not lonely, but I am certainly older - in fact a 71 year old grandfather.

If you ever need a chat either post on this general forum, or alternatively private message any of us by clicking on the little envelope icon that appears near to each of our user names.

Take care.

hello Anne i will chat to you anytime..i too live alone and am in my 50s here anytime you need a chat okey dokey x

Hi Anne.  I work from home, so I get little chance to meet with people, and although I am busy, I do get lonely.  I am OAP age, even though I am still working, doing the books for my husband's business.

I would be happy to call you my friend, just let me know.

Pat.

HI Anne, I am in my 50's and have a couple of health problems - including depression - but working on it!

Lonliness has been a problem for me for years. I gave up working some years ago, and although I have a lovely husband and practically grown up son, very few friends or family where I live now. I'm not someone who can just sit ad watch daytime TV. I need to read or do something more productive, but am socially phobic about approaching social clubes.

So yes please - chat any time at all!!!

Regards, Carole.

Hello Anne I understand the feeling for years I was so busy taking care of everyone and working I was too busy to be lonely or depressed my late husband always said That I was depressed but did not know it,he was seriously ill for 12 years, now I am at loose ends and anxiety and depression are taking over.I know the lonely feeling can be bad do you have family you can turn to?

I'm 43 and am quite happy to chat.x

How are you doing today Anne.

I don't know where you live, but in my part of the country the sun is out and it is the start of a wonderful new day.

Have you thought about trying to get some fresh air, even just a brief walk around outside might help?

Hello there is a new 24hour service called the silver line 0800 4708090 where older people can call if they feel lonely and want someone to talk to. It is 24hrs a day & completely confidential.

I hope this helps a little.

Thanks.  Was having a down day, but Ok today.

Bless you.  Was having a down day but feeling better today.  Yes I do have family and saw a couple of them for lunch and cheered me up a lot.

Thank you so much.  I was having a down day yesterday but feeling a lot better today.  I do get out, just sometimes when home alone the days seem very long.  I do have a dear cat though and he is company.

Thank you Lesley.  So kind.  Feeling better today.  Just sometimes days alone at home not too good, but I do go out, and have family.  Forgive my self centerdness.  Was a down day yesterday.

Hello grandad from a 74 year old grandma!!!   Love the dog!!

I still get downs even though I stopped my anti depressants 18 months ago after 30 years.  Just a bit of a down day.  Lovely replies, so grateful to everyone.  What lovely people here.

No I am fine.  Having a down day that's all.  Sometimes days alone seem long, but I do get out a lot and have family and a cat.  I live in a lovely part of the country.  Don't have a car any more but use my bus pass quite a lot and visit other places.  Just feeling a bit sorry for myself.  Thanks for your lovely message
