Hi Chandan,

I've posted about my chest keloid several times so I won't repeat it all but I'll say she needs to find a dermatologist that treats keloids. She seems to have brown skin, so she may want to find a Dr who is familiar with working with people if color. Brown/dark skin takes to some treatments differently. Some of the most promising treatments are SRT-100 where the keloid is cut off then a couple days later treated with a laser. It's believed that the laser stops the growth of the scar... otherwise, keloids should not be cut off because they almost always grow back larger.

There's also Cryoshape (the procedure I had) where a probe is put through the keloid and frozen from the inside out. The procedure itself takes maybe 15-20minutes. It's followed up by kenelog steroid injections about 4wks later. The healing process is lengthy but worth it.

Another is just doing kenelog injections or 50/50 split of kenelog and 5-fu injections...they are painful. Feels like a rubber band snap followed by a stinging sensation. But it does help shrink the scar over time. But it's not really a long term treatment...they have to be repeated 4-6wks until the scar is flat...and even then after some time the scar may begin to rise again. Injections are best when used in conjunction with another treatment like the ones mentioned above.

And lastly, my dermatologist told me there was a study about Botox helping with stopping the growth of a keloid...she said it seemed promising. Worked as well as steroid injections but lasted 3mo before needing another injection.

My advice is to read everything you can about various treatments. Be well informed then call dermatologists. Find out which ones offer the treatments you are most interested in...ask them about the pros and cons, the cost (most insurance won't cover the treatments...and treatment is expensive), how long the healing process is, also managing your expectations about what it will look like once it's healed. Scared skin will never look like perfect unscared skin. And that's ok!! Just want to it to be flat, itch and pain free...and not growing!

All the best to you and your mom.
