Omeprazole vs Lansoprazole

Hi,

Has anyone been either of these medications for GERD.  I started on Omeprazole then my doctor gave me Lansoprazole to try but found that I had stomach probelms on this, constipation and feeling sick so have started taking Omeprazole again.  I hope that it doesn't make things worse by changing meds, has anyone else had to do this?

Thanks

I have tried all the different ones but now am on lanzoprezole but a higher dose 40mg twice a day and things are alot better.I think doctors tend to always put people on 20mg dose twice a day but my doctor says that is too low for alot of people and only a maintenance dose.I think constipation is a key for alot of people I take domperidone tablets which make food pass through the digestive system quicker and a drug called prucalopride for bowels and these two drugs work good together but I don't know if everyone can get prucalopride as I got them from a specialist after a colonoscopy to diagnose slow bowel but perhaps you could discuss it with your gp if you have these problems also, hope thus helps

Been on them both. Both standard ppi meds some suit better than others but do same thing. I was on both before I had my linx

I have also just switched to lansoprezole, 30mg twice a day -  but have the opposite problem - how crazy!

Hi Maureen,

Many thanks for replying to me.  I have tried both as I don't think either are working as they should for me so wanted to test them both out to see which I felt best on.  I have less side effects with Omeprazole.  May I need a higher doseage.  I will speak to my GP again.  I am awaiting an endoscopy at the moment so waiting to see what actually is going on inside, but I am sure that I have GERD as I have all the symptoms!  Tanks for your help. Amanda.

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me.  These forums are a life saver at times for getting advice for things like that.  I just didn't want to mix too much but they both do the same thing don't they.  Thanks again.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.  It is crazy how these meds effect people.  I suppose what suits one doesn't always suit another and its trial and error with most of it.

Hi Amanda My experienc is minly of Lansoprole. I have been taking it for two months now 30mg daily. Its certainly helped me andI thought given my wife has been on it some years 15mg daily that I was on a high dose  I am surprised to read some are on mg twice a day.Because I am having trouble sleeping of a night I am now also on 300mg of Ranitidine.

In my naivety I was hoping that I would gradually get back to feeling " normal " but by what I have read of others experiences on here that is just wishful thinking on my part.I know there are far worse things that can happen with my health but it does worry me that they cannot tell me why acid is getting into my stomach and it also makes me wonder what the long term effects are of the drugs I am taking will be.

There is some great advice on here on how to avoid taking PPIs but given mine have reduced the pain I am loathe not to take them.

Good Luck  Ted

how long ago did you have your linx and did it work?

why did you go with linx instead of the nissen? im having an upper gi done soon but ive looked into these procedures.

I had it seven months ago the reason I chose links over the Nissan was due to the fact it is a lot less invasive also it is reversible it also allows you to throw up and burp. The recovery issues are far better And it's a modern technique and the way forward I have heard so many horror stories about Nissen so was lucky to be offered it under the NHS

Hi Ted.

Many thanks for replying.  I am still on Lansoprazole as it is a higher doseage than I was on with Omeprazole. I don't like taking tablets usually but if it helps.  How are you with taking the Ranititdine too?  I would love too to be back to normal ha, ha!  I guess these type of things will take time to settle down.  I am awaiting an camera down in a few weeks so will see what that comes back with.  Its mainly the eating part for me, as I am mainly on a liquid diet for now as I can't get solids down with my lumpy throat - once that is sorted and I can get a decent meal down me I am sure I will feel tons better!

Amanda

Hi,

I just wondered what Nissen and linx, is that some sort of procedure and did it help?

Thanks

Hi Amanda they are both surgical procedures the linX is a laparoscopic procedure I.e. keyhole surgery so it is not very invasive they use a titania am magnetic band which goes around the oesophagus and acts as a valve I had it done seven months ago after many years of suffering I now feel amazing it is the best thing ever. The other procedure frightens the life out of me it is very invasive it is work they the stomach up and stick it around the oesophagus it is not reversible unlike the procedure I had you can neither bird or vomit so it is very restrictive I have also had many horror stories about this operation.the linx is a fantastic procedure but it is relatively new, the criteria for it tends to be very very strict in the respect that they will not perform it if you have Barretts or a hiatus hernia larger than 3 cm it is also only carried out in a handful of hospitals under the NHS you can have it privately and the full cost is approximately £8000 if there is any information you require on it just ask I hope this helps you and good luck.      Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for getting back to me.  That is very usefuld as I have never heard of these procedures.  How bad was you before you were allowed the operation?  I am yet to get confirmation what is wrong with me and am awaiting a camera down within the next few weeks, although from my symptoms I am sure it is either GERD or LPR.  It all started from some tablets that I was on for a chest infection, its mad!  Hows did you start with your problems?

Thanks, Amanda.

Hi Amanda

I started with my problems over 20 years ago with acid reflux I was prescribed PPIs which I have been on they worked fine for awhile until about two years ago it was then my condition got worse and I was referred to my local hospital for a consultation it was then that I had a series of tests and the outcome being I was offered linx

Ok thank you for your reply.  I will keep you updated with what happens with me.  Glad that you are better.

Amanda.

Please do and thank you

paul

Hi again Amanda

Yes it is a pain taking tablets but what are we too do !

As i may have said I have only just started taking the Ranititdine and its replaced the Gaviscon I was taking just before I go to bed.So at least its saved me having to spend money on that. I am beginning to think that it is giving me a good nights sleep so its worth me taking it.

It must be awful just having to stick to a liquid diet as its bad enough having to restrict my own diet to particular foods and drinks. Thankfully I was never a alcohol drinker or coffee either so at least I am able to have my usual cups of tea.I am avoiding fried food so I am mainly eating chicken and fish.I keep reading that its better to keep meals small but I am not sure what size a small meal is.

Hopefully you will be able to eat that meal vey soon and that should make you feel better.

Regards

Ted

Hi amanda, you said this started from some tablets for a chest infection, were those antibiotics?

Im in my early 40s and yy lpr and other symptoms started about april 2014 when I took antibiotics. things havent been easy ever since.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for getting back to me.  I have luckily had a call yesterday saying that there was a cancellation at one of my local hospitals for a camera down procedure tomorrow at 2pm so I am glad about that!  I am not looking foward to it but at least it will get it done out of the way!  Will see what the results come back with but I will be surprised if it isn't GERD or LPR but we will see and see what they can do for me after diagnosis.   I would be happy to stick to a plain diet as I am missing eating solid food at the moment!  I was quite overweight which I know doesn't help but with having this I have lost two and half stone up to now so hopefully that will help too.

I will keep in touch.

Hope that you feel better soon.

Amanda.
