I am 5 weeks after my hip OP I am keen to get on my bike. How long should I wait.

I really think you should ask your surgeon this. I was given very strict restrictions for 6 weeks, then cleared at 6 weeks. Can you bike and respect restrictions given by your surgeon?

So much depends on your personal situation, health, etc.

Hi Rex, I also am 5 weeks post op, will be 6 weeks on Tuesday. I am not sure about a bike. I have one of the pedal exercisers that I use but still not the same as a bike...Maybe someone else can be of more help than I....Wishing you well....Barb

@rex65981, I am 6 weeks post-op from bilateral hip replacements.  I was just advised yesterday that I can begin riding my bike with no resistance, and try to keep it slow.  If I have any pain, I have to stop.  But like the others have said, please check with your doctor or therapist before trying anything new.

do you mean roadside or stationary? 

When is your follow up appointment? As others said here, ask your surgeon - I think stationary bike ould be okay, on the road maybe not yet because of the falling off aspect --

how are you doing otherwise?

I agree with the others, wait til after your follow up!  You will enjoy cycling all the more if you know your hip is ready to take on the challenge. X

I am so please all go very well. I had the other hip done 2 years ago I can't wait to get back to my dancing, badminton and bike riding. 

Have you had a hip replacement ?

For indoor exercise bike - ask the physio - I was cleared at 6 weeks.

For outdoor bike - ask the surgeon - I was cleared at 12 weeks.  

I think the main risks are with overdoing the exercise indoors, and with coming off the bike when you are our and about.

yeah, I had 2 THR surgeries within 6 months ... 

stationary bike will probably be approved by your surgeon - It is considered one of  the best exercises after walking - 

just don't overdo it but build it up - well, you know already

Dear Rex, 

This is a cautionary tale for you - I had a bit of a paranoid fear after my thr that I would fall as soon as I got back on my bike, so I went to a place that had trikes and asked to have a go on one first (thinking hey, it's literally impossible to fall off a trike).

Got on it in their workshop yard and rode it straight into a mess of bikes in the corner. Had failed to understand that while on two wheels a lot of steering is done with the body, leaning on a tricycle does nothing at all. :-) After that my own bike felt a lot safer to me.

Thanks for the info. I will take it easy. I hope your well after your fall and getting around. I have a badminton club on Monday night I have been told not to play until 12 weeks. I am feeling so much better after my OP.on the 21st May.

Wising you well for tonight Rex - no sudden moves (though how you can play badminton without sudden moves escapes me). No harm from the trike event, though that was last year and first thr. Now on my second thr at 7 weeks and gone stir crazy. I've had a bone-conserving mini-hip - good future proofing but a long, conservative recovery.

If you can get back to badminton, I should be able to get back to pickleball.  Do you have a plan for when you'll get back on the court?

I would also wait until you get the all clear. My consultant allowed me at 6 weeks, and it was wonderful! Just getting on and off very carefully.

My consultant said:

stationary bike - 6 weeks

Riding on the road - never, too much risk falling off

I will cycle outside but on soft surfaces maybe...around lakes etc. I would love to cycle on the road again, but not sure I have the confidence to risk it.
