One month since Rezum procedure

I had the procedure done one month ago yesterday. I had an enlarged prostate so the Urologist had to poke me 11 times. I left his office with a Foley catheter and after four days I had it removed and couldn’t empty my bladder. The pain was so bad I had to go to the ER and they emptied me using another catheter. I wound up going to the ER

4 times with the same issue . Finally my Uroligist taught me to self cath and I did that 3 times a day for 10 days and FINEALLY I started urinating on my own. The problemI have now is I have retro

orgasims, which I dont  like ! I’m afraid the procedure destroyed the ejaculatory tube in the prostate.

I see the Uroligist on May 7th and will discuss that with him.

I don’t have any problem urinating now, but I don’t like the sexual side effect. Reading others comments, if the Uroligist would stay away from the ejaculatory duct with the steam needle there might not be a problem.

I am so sorry but with 11 shots you are going to end up with retro. The steam fry's anything in it path.  Last year there was another guy on he John.  52  Got talk into it.  Only did 4 shots.  Did not help him at all but ended up with retro.  He went to the doctor and there is nothing he can do.  Everything to fuse together.  I hope it at least help with your problem  Ken

I ended up with Retro from Rezum too, but it partially came back after about 6 months. It might get better.

Trikerjon, do you have links to where others have had rezum and the drs stayed away from the ejactulatory ducts? I would really  to see that.

Thank you for your comments Ken and unfortunately for me I agree with you. I was hoping there was a chance the Retro was

temporary but the more I read the more I believe it’s permanent,

especially with 11 steam injections. I see the Uroligist on May 7 but I’m sure the news won’t be good regarding the problem.

Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for the information, but I don’t think I’ll be that lucky, considering I had 11 steam injections.

I hate to make a comment like this but I hope it will help someone considering Rezum. I considered Rezum when I had to make a decision 18 months ago. The Urologist was selling me hard on this.

I found Focal Laser Ablation by a brilliant doctor in Houston. The reason I went with FLA is because I realized he had full eyes

No sorry I don’t have links, I found them by going through the comments left by other members. There are a lot of them and they all pretty much say the same thing how the steam destroys the ducts. If the Uroligist is careful and the patient only receives

only a few steam injections, he can stay away from the ducts and hopefully not destroy them with the steam.

Good evening Guy's.  I did read in the last year a few men had the Rezum procedure done on the Right side only to stay away from the ducts.  The doctor told them that they would not get the full benefit of the procedure.  They told the doctor that they did not care that they were more concerned with retro.  The doctor told them ok.  They were both in there early 50's.  I do not remember if he did 2 or 3 injection on the right side but it did work for them and they did not get retro. Also I have read that if the doctor injects at the top of the prostate and the bottom.  You have a better chance of it not going to the middle where the ducts are because the steam does not know what is good tissue or bad.  Trikerjon.  I feel sorry for you buddy.  That doctor was to aggressive with you  I think 11 id over kill.  I hope it a lease works for you. Did he tell you before he did it how many he was going to do. Take care  Ken

Trikerjon.I forgot to ask you did you voice your concerns with your doctor about retro....Ken

There was another guy on here John Had it done last June only had 4 injections.  It did not work for him and he ended up with retro.  Just went to the doctor last week to see if there was something that can be done.  And he was told nothing.  I did ask my urologist there is a surgery that you can have but I don't remember what is was.  But it only give you a 50 - 50 shot.  I will have to go through my e-mail from my doctor.  Take care  Ken

I don’t think I stand a chance of

me recovering from the retro from all I’ve read on this forum.

I didn’t know the Uroligist did

11 steam injections till after he

was done with the procedure.

I didn’t have any time prior to

having the procedure to research it and find out what the

negative results could be. I was lead to believe that I would retain the function and that’s why I opted for Rezum as opposed to the Green Light Laser

I hope it at least works for you.  But you have to remember some doctor when they say function they do not consider a man ejaculation a sexual function.  They think just because we are not having kids we don't need it.  Good luck  Ken

The good news is that long-term sexual side effects are fairly rare after Rezum (but EVERY ablative procedure has the potential for them.)

You are still early in your healing process, and I wish you the best.

How large was your prostate? 11 treatments is a lot; usually reserved for very large glands.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, but I will be very surprised if that were

my case

He never told me till after the procedure and he did another guy with 10

steam injections the same day.

I was not aware that the steam would destroy the ducts. There again I didn’t have time to research it. I had just had knee surgery on the 13 th of

April,  wound up with a blood infection, spent 4 days in the hospital, was sent home with a catheter, when it was removed I couldn’t urinate, wound

up in the ER and was told to see a Uroligist. They sent me to the guy

that shouldn’t be practicing medicine. He did the finger test and told me my prostate was enlarged and could do the Rezum procedure, which I never heard of before. I switched Urologists and he also said I had an enlarged

prostate by doing the finger test. He then explained there were 3 options,

Rezum, Green light and Uro-Lift. I chose Rezum because it was the least

invasive  and he could do it at 3:00pm that day in his office. That’s all the time I had to research it.I wound  up 3 more times in the ER to have catheters put in, till finally the Uroligist put me on self-cath , 10 days later

I could finally urinate.

By the way I’m 77 years old

First of all with getting the first catheter in you ended up with a prostate infection.  That is why it was large.  You were rushed into it.  You should had said no.  Uro-lift is less invasive then Rezum  All they do is pull the prostate open.  It does the same as all the procedure make a tunnel and with Uro-lift there are no side effects.Ken

Trikerjon - I have good news and bad news. First the good - I think there is a reasonably good chance that you're RE will eventually resolve. This procedure generally doesn't cause RE regardless of the number of sprays and you shouldn't feel its more likely because of the number you had. As I've said, mine came back partially after something like 6 months.

The bad - you may not have needed Rezum at all. If you were having issues prior to your knee surgery, perhaps you did. But if not, Anesthesia often locks bladders up for anywhere from one void to two weeks. its quite possible that if you went home and started self cathing right away, you would have been able to pee when you did or even sooner. As I've said, without a proper diagnosis (and a finger up the butt is not a proper diagnosis), there is no way to know what was causing your retention.

But take heart, those ejaculations may well come back. This forum is not a representative sample of anything but people asking questions or with bad outcomes. Such is the nature of these things - so don't presume the % of people on this forum reporting permanent RE mirrors the population at large, or that people who gradually went back to normal bothered to report that 8 months later.

Another piece of good news, many (and no one knows why) people report that Rezum sets their sexual clock back many years. You won't know on that for awhile.

Thanks for all the encouraging words. I guess only time will tell at this point.

I will report the final outcome in the future, hopefully it can help future patience make a more informed decision as to whether REZUM is right for them.
