One word answer only please

Ok so there's a few times now that I have read people say depression is an illness it can be cured however I belief it's a lifestyle I thing it can masked but not cures so allow me to explain them please chose the one you think it is with one word i.e. Illness or lifestyle just so we know

Illness- a temporary set back that can be treated and you become better suffering no after effects thereafter ( like a cold or infection)

Lifestyle- it becomes something you deal with you find ways best to cope it fades and some days you hardly notice it it becomes routine you can help it with things but it's always there.

Remember one word answer please which is it you you

i wont answer in one word (because thats not really how this site works, feel free to ignore if you like).  Your starting with your own determination of what illness and lifestyle means - and everyones situation is different.  Depression can be either, or it can be both, its not as cut and dried as that

Thankyou jmcg2014 of course your right that its a matter of perception

I'm assuming then from your answer you do indeed know a person whom has had depression and has made a total recovery?

Thankyou again for your input and of course the educational value of the comment both on how the site works and of how cut a dry depression is i had no idea of its complexity until now!

Howwever I think you have mis-interpreted the question, I hope you don't find this to patronising although I feel the need to explain the question as one not to impose a point of view on to people I decided to break it down into two categories as it's seems apparent these two are opposing one suggests you can get better from depression the other suggests you'll always suffer from depression

My question is directed therefore not as from my perspective but merely asking others how they perceive it!!

To which you say you prefer not to answer in a one word answer however I couldn't help but to notice you haven't answered it in any words infact you have still in many words left me to make an assumption on what your answer is maybe you could clarify what your answer was exactly? Do you think you can get better from depression or do you think you'll have it forever? Is the question to clarify thanks look forward to your answer

Mike

Lifestyle xxx

Lifestyle for the cronic , illness for those that have just one episode( exemple : you lose a close one, you can have a depression episode that can go away and never come back).

If the depression becomes cronic, i dont think it has a real cure.Managing it its the only way.

Illness

Hi again I'm sorry I also just wanted you to know as I noticed you informed me I could ignore your post I find it bad manners to ignore a post so that wouldn't happen if fact I believe if people ignored people less the depression wouldn't get as right of a grip on them. Although we may have apposing views on subjects I'd never ignore you for future reference I'd like to make that clear your point of view is as important as everyone else's thankyou again

Chat soon hopefully

Thankyou Sophie

I'm not sure that if you lose someone close to you that would be depression as much as griefthough again that may be my point of view although I do understand what you mean

Like I imagine post natel depression can happen once if you have one child etc so yeah very good point thanks x

I hope you are right Phyllis you know I'd love to believe that are you better now as in no meds or do you know someone that is?

Thankyou

Mike

I would say lifestyle.

I've learnt how to control it or deal with it. When I find myself starting to feel depressed I have to snap myself out of it.

Hi Becky not met you before so hi and yes I'd have to agree 100% with you on that I believe we learn how to cope and how best to mask those feelings thankyou for your input

Hope your ok stay strong

You can't answer that it's peoples opinions

You can be born with depression as a baby due to chemical imbalances in the brain

You can lose someone and become depressed

You can literally just be depressed over nothing

no two people are the same

Hi live life that's the point I'm making and your right totally

You can get depression at any time for any reason I get that

Totally agree with you but can you get rid of depression

What I'm trying to establish here is if anyone knows of anyone that has suffered depression medicated depression and can now say I'm not depressed any more I'm cured better what ever the case may be I have no medication I have great friend a great life and I'm happy that's what I want to know

Well my mom is living and breathing proof, she was severely depressed before I was born and tried to kill herself but someone found her in time, now she is completely happy takes no medication and doesn't even think about it anymore

Hey that's beautiful like so really you saved your mums life I kinda feel the same way about my daughter ya know that's so nice to read that

I'm not playing your game of one word only. I don't know the answer, I hope it is an illness and for some people I think it is - some people have one bout and never get it again. I have definately had times in my life I have not been depressed but I have a tendancy to depression. Thinking of it as lifestyle is very depressing in itself but even if it lifestyle it does not mean you can't get some control over it at times. I am quite depressed at the moment after a relatively good patch. I'm not giving up, I am seeing my psychiatrist on Wednesday and looking for a change in meds. Meds have definately helped me and allow me to function day to day, it's just that some days are harder (some MUCH harder) then they should be. I think as I write    I am coming round to 'illness'. An illness can be lifelong with periods of remission - just because it is an illness does not mean it can be cured. I have ME as well and I don't think there is any cure for that, I definately don't see it as a lifestyle. Lifesytle has negative conitations, it almost implies that you are choosing to life like you do and I am sure that is not true for almost everybody. Yes, 'illness', I'm sure now.

Depends on the person, the causation etc.

You really think there's a simple answer lol? If only...

Oh no jan i definitly don't think there's a simple answer I tell you why I ask is this I'm sick of swallowing pills to make me feel what the Drs call relatively normal personally I hope it does getting however I've met ppl on this site that have been on medication for 30plus years and still suffer with depression which would suggest there's no cure for it I myself have been depressed before now a few times that's my point it's reoccurring so is it an illness as in one day it'll go and that's that all done or is it something that's just going to keep appearing Drs give you hope tell you to take this take that and do this cbt etc

What I am trying to establish is whether acceptance thatbyour not going to get better from this should be considered it seems only one person so far has said I know someone that's all better from it which to me would indicate it's very rare people get past it it's always they

Like for instance if you think or thought pattern you have conscious thought

Sub conscious thought and

Unconscious thought

The best way to describe the way a brain works is think of a wardrobe of clothes

Now the clothes you wear every day you use all the time (conscious thought)

The clothes you might wear on a night out you have access to if you need ( sub-conscious thought) and the clothes you put away or won't use ( unconscious thought)

What I'm saying is it clearly lives in the sub-conscious thought you know from time to time it creeps forward to conscious thought I get that is it every removed does it every get placed in the unconscious thought or will it live in your sub-conscious thought and keep creeping into conscious thought

Hope that makes sense

For me personally Lifestyle.  For others it could be different.

Hi bm

I hopefully your right as I've said I hope ppl get better although I'm more convinced it's lip services paid to us by Drs we remain hopeful of course yet the results are stagnant you get so far and crash I'm wondering if this continues for ever

I not sure I care for the implication I am making a game of the condition if I'm completely honest for a game implies fun and depression illness or lifestyle what ever the case maybe is not something to make fun of

That being said your entitled to your opinion
