This is my one year aniversary of my THR and i'm feeling good, i returned to playing golf after about 4 months, but have only recently had the courage to return to the gym. Today i managed to run 5 Km in 30 minutes and feel fine. Can anyone advise if i'm ok to do this level of activity, i don't seem to have any after effects.
Hi brisgolfer,
I’m very happy for you!
Steve
Congratulations on a good recovery. My first hip replacement lasted me for twenty years of very physical work and although I could easily run my surgeon advised against it.
Cheers, Richard
Hi Brisgolfer,
Congrats! Sounds like you are doing great. It's been 1 year and if you can run a 5K, then I'm sure the gym shouldn't be a problem. Just listen to your body when you are doing anything... Don't know what kind of THR you had, but if you have a chance to dislocate your hip, just avoid doing any exercises that might facilitate this.
If your not experiencing any pain or other signs from THR then more power to ya! Your story is about the goals we set for ourselves after THR and your in the lane to enjoy life and regained mobility. Just as a precaution check with your surgeon as he is best qualified to access your lifestyle and always good to be on the safe side. Golf/walking great way to stay in shape.
Its great to hear a success story & all the many efforts you went thru, hard work, & the many milestones you have accomplished was well worth it to return to the lifestyle you enjoy. Cheers and go for it! 🎉
I am 12 weeks post op, saw my dr and was released today. I experienced a tear in my quad muscle in the front of my leg for unknown reason @8wks , appear recovered and feeling pretty good. I asked Dr about returning to Jazzercise. He said to do so gradually, not because of the THR but the quad tear not to re-injure it so soon. With that being said, he told me I could do anything I felt up to doing. He told me some of the discomfort could last up to a year but I can’t even imagine at 1 Year not feeling able to do so much more! I wish you the best of luck and hope you go for it!
Funny thing but I discovered here in Spain that it depends upon whether your doctor does the particular exercise themselves. I have spinal stenosis as well and my neurosurgeons kicked me off my road bicycle two years ago but said I could ride a mountain bike around town. Six months ago I came across a surgeon that was a cyclist and was encouraging me to do it. After THR two months ago, I had to beg my surgeon to let me ride my bike to the gym to swim but got permission when I brought him a medical journal article supporting it. I have read on here also about others running on a treadmill. Pick your poison
Hey it's business as usual!
I guess it’s about risk. Usually running is not advised however I would say check with the surgeon. I would like to ski again and although I’m sure I would be fine skiing if I fell on my hip side I could risk dislocation so decided not to.

Dear Julie
Whilst I was perfectly able to run after my hip replacement in 1997 I felt that it would be short sighted to ignore the guidance of my very experienced surgeon.
I would have liked to have continued with hang gliding but that generally involved a short run at take off and landing. I understand that the impact to the joint from running is what risks putting it at risk. I can also see how this jarring could potentially loosen the stem in the femur so I decided to play safe!
I had twenty years of physically demanding use if the hip before the poly cup wore through. The revision did not require the stem to be replaced so perhaps my not running was sound advise.
All the best, Richard
Did you have cemented hip operation or the one where the bone grows around it ? Hope I have explained this correctly
Very encouraging for me. I'm now 7weeks post LTHR and I'm aiming to get back on the golf course at the start of May which will be 4 & a half months. I used to be able to run 5K in 28 mins before the hip gave way, but I don't think I'll have the courage to take it up again!

As fat as I am concerned, running is ok in a pool 4 ft deep, like we have here along with the olympic swimming pool. Now 8 weeks and have returned to swimming an hour (with fins) followed by 30 min+ running in the shallow pool then the thermal spa daily.
I ran at 5 weeks and did fine
OMG, at 5 weeks I was back in hospital!
I’m sure I would be fine too but have gravitated to a different sport for safety of my spine.
My surgeon isn’t keen on me running, but he’s ok with me skiing. I avoid bumps, and I don’t ski when the light is bad. I also have a bit of body armour which adds extra protection.
The one where the bone grows around it i think
Mine is cemented in but I image the other option where the bone grows over would in the end be sturdier and last longer , unless my perception is incorrect
You sound like my twin brother, i use to run 5 km in just 28 mins and took 4 months before going back to playing golf, i felt like i could have played after a bout 2 months but listened to all the advice and rested it. pleased i did and my friends think i'm a better golfer now than before my op. stick with your plan and you'll be fine, just do plenty of walking, i was doing about 6 km a day
