Hi everyone, can someone please relate to me and give me some advise. Twenty years ago I had a hysterectomy leaving my right sided ovary, last October I have an oophorectomy as remaining ovary developed large 20cm cyst, this was surgically removed and went straight into surgical menopause immediatley. Immense night sweats, loss of sex drive, depression, anxiety, thinning hair and oh the list goes on. On post op check my Consultant suggested that he would be happy for me to go on Progesterone although I confess I smiled and pretended I was coping, I,m not. I really am struggling to cope now and not sure what to do. My Consultant has told me that if I have any worries I can ring him and he will see me rather than going through my not very understanding GP. Does anyone here relate to me or can give me any advise, please. Will Progesterone help me and ease these symptoms, also very concerned about future bone and heart health, going out of my mind with worry. Thank you in advance.
In 1990 the same thing happened to me and I suffered the same symptoms. I had a very supportive and sympathetic GP who prescribed a progesterone only pill. Within 2 weeks all my symptoms disappeared and I felt normal once again. I still take my little pink tablets (although it's more difficult persuading my GP to prescribe them as imy 61) but I couldn't have coped without them. Please give them a try.
Thank you very much for reply I appreciate it and glad to hear that you are doing so well. I feel reassured that I am not alone in this nightmare and there is light at the end of this horrible journey. I will ring my Consultants secretary and get an appointment, don,t want to go to GP as I was dismissed as nurotic and constipated time and time again when I had the Ovarian cyst, until I begged for a scan - so no confidence there. Luckily Consultant is fantastic and approachable so will go for it now. Thank you.

Thanks for reply, yes have started the ball rolling, today I had blood tests to check first of all that thyroid levels are ok, as I already have underactive thyroid and take 150mcg thyroxine daily I should make sure thats all level first as I think that can effect things also ( not sure really ). Have an appointment Monday with nice lady GP to discuss results of that and then can move on from that, so will let you know. - Having so many sleepless nights, one raging night sweat after the other, am thinking of filling my huge paddling pool back up ( grandchildrens! ) so that I can lay in it in the night like a madwoman! seriously though am really feeling so exhausted through lack of sleep, worry, stress, nausea, palpatations so bad I think my chest will explode it,s just a complete nightmare, just want my life back instead of crying all the time.
Hello Lou. Nice to see you still have a sense of humour despite feeling so awful. I did laugh your remark about the paddling pool. I can identify with that! Fingers crossed all goes well on Monday. Your symptoms certainly warrant a prescription for HRT.
Hello again Matron, thank you for reply. I am so glad I am not on my own, hubby doesn,t understand ! sometimes I wonder if there is anything else wrong with me as these symptoms are so alien to me, I used to be so active, I have my own little cleaning business and could work all day every day, but now after two hours I am exhausted, crawl to my car and have to come home and lie down, even making a cup of tea is an effort ! This oophorectomy really has knocked me sideways. Hope you are well.
Hi again. I was working full time and had to literally drag myself to work and at work I struggled every day. That was until I was prescribed HRT. The change in me was remarkable after less than 2 weeks. Men don't understand. My husband didn't. Until of course he saw the change in me. I'm sure if you get this wonderful medication you'll feel so much better.
Morning - thats such great news for you, you must feel so much better I,m so happy for you as I know how you must of felt. I did buy myself a pack of Menopace Plus but then read that they contain Iodine, so that idea was no good with the thyroind problem - slept for an hour and a half last night, I heard the clock strike 4 and can,t remember any more, dragged myself up the road with the dog already and now have to get ready for work, just can,t wait to get this sorted, feel like I,m just going to collapse any minute. Good morning lou. It was in 1991 that I sat in my GP's room crying because I felt so I'll. After that day I never looked back. It was a long time ago and I'm still on HRT. I'm sure that if your GP prescribes it you'll also feel better and don't forget you've also had major surgery. Take care
Hello again. Gosh poor you, I can imagine how you were feeling, just like me I expect, thank goodness things are good for you now. I was at work this morning ( like a zombie ) and had a call from the surgery, terrified me - regarding blood tests I had yesterday, GP wants to see me this evening at 6pm, reception wouldn,t say, just that it was about the results, really worried now, will let you know later. Also did bloods for liver and kidney function, hope to goodness theres nothing else going on. Chat later.

Could be like me, got left in sun and came back abnormal, redone and was fine. If says something not right, which sure won't they like to scare us!, ask for it to be re-done. Could be showing a low vitD level which is nothing to worry about and is common in women.

Evening again, phew once again am confused. All bloods fine apart from thyroid, levels raised to T4 25.3 and TSH 0.1. That means way too much thryroxine in body which can cause palpatations, tiredness etc, so have to lower dose of 150mcg to 125mcg. Asked Dr about HRT and he wasn,t too happy about it, said my body has had too many shocks to deal with anything else at the moment and he wants the thyroid to settle down and see how I am in two months time with more blood tests. Trouble is some of the symptoms I have are aslo similar to thyroid/ menopause etc.... doesn,t explain no sex drive, dryness, and other things, am confused dot com ! x
I'm not surprised you're confused. What a muddle! Have you still got that original appointment with the female doctor? If so I would keep it and see what she says. It's all very confusing now because your symptoms could be caused by your thyroid but at the end of the day you don't have your ovaries so you will be menopausal. It would be extremely unusual not to be and that's the issue here.
Yes I agree with you, I have to be menopausal - no womb no ovaries from surgical menopause. Yes i still have appointment on monday I havn,t cancelled it and I will go, maybe lady Dr will be more understanding, I just want to feel better like we all do, it,s just unfortunate that this thyroid problem has come along at the same time as everything else. I also have the option of going direct to my consultant / surgeon at the hospital who has dealt with me hands on so to speak, he said I can go to him if there are any worries or problems, oh it,s all so exhausting isn,t it.
Yes lou you could do without all this hassle but if you have access to your consultant that's where I would go. At the end of the day he's the expert in all this not your GP!
Yes, thank you that makes sense. You are right he is the expert and at the end of the day it was the GP who sent me away in the first place with laxatives and said there was nothing wrong with me and it was all in my head, and hey 20cm cyst and major surgery, I sometimes do wonder if I hadn,t trusted my instincts in the first place and demanded a scan if I would still be here today, I really do. I try not to dwell on thier dismissal of me but it really eats me up sometimes and makes me very angry.
So lou trust your instincts again. Give his secretary a ring and make an appointment to speak to him.
