Oops! And now discomfort! Worried😖

Hi Fellow Hippies,

Something weird happened last night/early morning. I was standing up fixing the blanket on my bed. I dont know why( old habit maybe or just sleepiness) but I kneeled on my bed on my operated knee and then lost my balance and rolled back onto the bed with my leg bent underneath me. Amazingly my leg was not turned inward or outward. I felt my ankle andcknee crack( no pain). Almost like a super quad stretch but not in a good way. I have some discomfort and have been icing the groin, lower back/ buttocks and outer thigh. I am able to walk with my cane as I had before. Of course now I am scared that i did something to the hip replacement. Since I am fairly new to the hippie world, would it be obvious if i dislocated hip or did damage to placement of new hip? I'm not sure what it would feel like. I am 6.5 weeks post op and am going for my follow up on Monday, so I'll know for sure then. Hope I just over stretched some muscles. Thank you for any insight.

Lori

I would not think if you had done something you would not be able to walk and it would be pretty painful.

do hope everything will be okay.

regards Lorna

Hi Lori

Im pretty sure its just overstretched muscles as dislocation is supposed to be agony. When I was about 6 weeks I bent over (golfer style) to pick something up but didnt hold on to anything and fell on to my non-operated side. It was a bit of a shock and the next couple of days I was very sore but then started to feel better aftera couple of days, with rest and ice packs.

Hope your pain soon improves and you are back on the recovery road. 😀

Thank you Lorna!

Linnet,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel a sense of relief now and also annoyed at myself for not being more careful. I hope you are recovering nicely.

Lori

My recovery is going well thanks Lori. Dont be annoyed with yourself its natural that our confidence grows as we recover without mishap so its possible that occaisionally we may take one step too far. Personally I think its better to take small chances as our recovery progresses rather than continually holding ourselves back out of fear. Some of our progress is governed by our bodies and we do things without thinking (right or wrong) and then have to accept the consequences!

Take care

Take care

If you had dislocated, you'd have the greatest difficulty just moving - so I don't think you have done that.  It is reported as 'pain off the scale'.

Hopefully just over stretched a bit.

Graham

Hi Graham,

After reading the responses here, I do feel reassured . Thank you for helping ease my worries a bit. Its amazing how the mind goes right to the worst fear. I guess Linett is right that sometimes we get comfortable in our recovery and arent as careful as we once were. Thankfully, my reality check was not a major mishap. Hoping all is going well with you.

Lori

Oh Lori, please let your doctor know and get an x-ray just to make sure that you did no damage.  I gasped when I read your description of this incident!  First of all, you are very good at describing it, and secondly, because I too have done something to both my hips this week and I know how scary it feels to entertain the possibility of having to go through another surgery!

The groin pain is the most telling.  Just go check it out just in case.

Hoping the best for you!

Dawn, USA

Also I wanted to add that my hip device actually came loose, just barely, and even my surgeon could not find it.  I was able to walk. The pain was on and off at first, unpredictable, but always groin.  Then with time, more constant and crippling. I ended up with a revision.  Now it is not only my revision hip that hurts, but my other hip replacement too, which has been 100% pain free for two years.  I slipped and jerked myself to keep from falling.

So just in case, having it checked out is the best in my opinion.

I am hoping along with you that you just overstretched your muscles. As the others have said, a dislocation would be obvious with mucho pain. And your follow-up on Monday should give you info about damage to the new hip, if there is any, which there probably isn't! The one good thing about this is that I am sure you will be much more careful in future. It is so hard to be on guard all the darn time, isn't it? We do the best we can, and that is all we can do. Take care.

Hi Dawn,

Yikes! I'm sorry you have been through all of that! Hiw terrible after being pain free for so long! How is your other hip replacement? Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for your advice. I will mention it to my surgeon on Monday when I have my 6 week follow up visit. From what I understand, xrays of my hips will be taken so I'll know for sure then( fingers crossed). I will keep you posted.

Thank you!

Lori

Hi Annie,

I am hoping for overstretched muscles and that this incident was only a "reality check". This definitely scared me into being much more aware of how i am moving. Hopefully , this was just a scare.( Fingers crossed)

I hope all is well with you.

Lori

Just checking in with you !!! There will be many other oopses  - My worst one was that I "forgot" to put my legs together to get out of the car at 7 weeks post-op - good ness , it set me back a bit -

but I am pretty sure that you will know when your hip dislocated ---

big warm hug

renee

Hi Renee,

Oh my! I shuddered when I thought about what happened to you. I hope you are better now. After hearing from you all, I am confident thst I did not dislocate my hip. I'm worried that I did do damage though. Hoping I just overstretched some muscles and nothing more permanent. It was definitely a wake up call to be more aware. I see surgeon on Monday for my follow up/ xrays so I will know for sure then. Thanks for checking in.

Hugs to you!

Lori

Lori,

Yes, the mind always seems to wander to the darkest corner.  And yes, we all 'push it' a bit, I know I have been breakingall sortsof rules as I attempt to get back to normal.  It's slow, but I am getting there.

Graham - 🚀💃

Poor girl..Good job you are being seen on MOnday.  You wouldn't beable to walk I don't think if you had done damage.

Hi Hipsters!

Just an update: I went for my 6 week follow up and xrays showed everything looked good and was happy to see I was walking with a cane. He said I hardly had any limp and. I could go without the cane for short distances. I told the surgeon about my mishap and he said I probably pulled some muscles. Whew!!! I was sooo worried and now feeling a sense of relief. Thank you all for your comments, concerns and well wishes!!

😜

Thank God!  So happy for you that it was good news and confirmed!

Hurray! Now you can do the happy dance (very carefully, of course)!
