Op cancelled - devastated

Was scheduled for op at 3 this afternoon. Was told I would get in early, all gowned up and was slightly worried hadn't seen anyone by 3. At 3.10 surgeon popped in to say family emergency so op cancelled. I'm gutted. I'll now have to re-arrange childcare, go back to work tomorrow, my husband will have to cancel leave and will now be less mobile in summer holidays when kids off. Can't believe it. Devastated.

Aw man Karen, that happened to me May 1st... Being sent home sucks!

the re-arranging of everything only adds to it.

Make sure they put you on the list as first next time! I raised some minor hell to have that sorted and the 15th I was first. It'll happen, be vocal about it!

Im booked in privately. Unfortunately surgeon away now until 29th June. I could ask for someone else but don't know if risky as only dealt with him so far.

Hi Karen, the same also happened to me.  Can't deny what a let-down it is, but the most important thing now is to ensure you chase them to be re-scheduled at the very first opportunity.  I hate raising a fuss, but found that if I didn't do so the hospital administartors were quite happy forget all about me.  Do keep at them.

Oh Karen you poor thing! I feel devastated for you. Of couurse the surgeon can't help it if it was a genuine emergency but that doesn't help you. Hiw long have you been waiting? If you're nearing your breach date you may be able to twist their arm and get it done sooner privately but paid for on the nhs.

Hope you feel better soon

Rosie xxxx

I'm having it done privately. Unfortunately surgeon away now until 29th June. It will get sorted but will cause me loads of problems, I'd finished up at work and will now have to go back. Just keep thinking it should have been over now.

I thought this was what one went private to avoid...

Oh Karen what can I say...... you need a great ((((((big hug))))) phone his secretary immediately and try and get another date as soon as possibe. I am so sorry.xxx

Karen, I am so sorry for you... Big hug.

I hope you are on top of the list when the surgeon comes back.

All the best, let us know what happens.

Ella

Oh, you poor girl....what an awful thing to happen...I can only imagine how bad that must feel....I don't think any words are going to make you feel better about it....but having said that, if he does genuinely have a family emergency but decided to do your op first I don't think he would have been in a fit state to give you all his attention and expertise......I do hope you get the date rearranged very soon. As for private medical care.....other half went for a consultation, took us half an hour to get there, we waited half an hour, then the receptionist told us he wasn't coming as he was 'somewhere else'!! I wrote to him to complain, but needless to say, heard nothing. I complained to the Health insurers, but they can't do anything either.....ah well.........time for change, I think......

Thank you. You are right of course. If he'd done op anyway or started then got call he may not have been 100% with me on the table. Coming to terms with it now just didn't expect it, especially when sitting in awful gown and paper pants waiting to go in lol. Better start rescheduling and get my head back into work more for tomorrow. X

What a nightmare. Totally feel for you as like me you have family etc.  my nhs sent me to private hospital so I wouldn't be bumped as hip near to total collapse. Hope all goes well

Hi Karen. Think this is first time I have replied to anyof your discussions. I'm 46, married, mum of 2 kids. Work p/t. Bone on bone since xmas.

So sorry to read about your predicament, how frustrating. Hope a swift call tomorrow to surgeons secretary, perhaps she can have a chat with operations appointment organisers who will give you another date.

I am supposed to be going in next week myself (pm) and am expecting it to be cancelled. .I know this is negative but nothing has gone to plan from beginning so why should it now!

Here's to pain free hip very soon.

Westie 😊

Hi Westie, its a nightmare isn't it. I only found out after Xmas that bone on bone so all been quite quick. We were lucky that hubby has health insurance through work so all sorted quite quickly and I chose today as after sons holy communion at weekend and was hoping to be driving when they broke up from school. It should get done 29th June but that puts me back 3 weeks, already booked camping at end of August. Oh well can't be helped. I knew he was off to America a few days after my op so just bad luck his father took Ill as I was getting ready to go down. Fingers crossed for 3 weeks time. Hope yours OK for next week. X Karen

Can't be helped I suppose. Just got to prep house, kids and hubby all over again. Aaargh! Lovely to have the support of all the other hippies here though. I showed my hubby your reply, he didn't realise how much support got from this site. Thanks x x x

Yeh. One of those things. His father took I'll. You can't argue with that can you. Just my double bad luck that he was away for few weeks so no chance at all of anything sooner than 29th unless I want different surgeon who I don't know. More upset that kids summer hols spoilt.

Hi Karen! Please contact choose and book and ask to be referred to the nearest Nuffield but under the NHS! I had my op in march! Went too see consultant in November! I am sure you can see some sooner! Go and see your doctor! Regards Amanda

I am so sorry this has happened Karen, its bad enough working yourself up to any op but being cancelled at the last minute, when you have everything in place, is even worse. Paying private you would expect it all to go to plan but, sometimes unavoidable emergencies happen. Best wishes and I hope you get a new date soon. Dot.

Dear Karen - Good Lord ... I don't know what to say ... so many surgeries are cancelled left and right - I live in Holland now and have lived in Los Angeles for 34 years - honestly, I have not heard of so many cancellations until now - You know, when my surgery was scheduled, I was asked by the ortho-surgeon whom I saw if I wanted him or if another surgeon would be okay too ... I left it open - just trusting that they know what they are doing ...  would you consider having another surgeon perrorm the surgery if that would mean that you can be operated on soon ?  I am so incredibly sorry ... thinking of you - warm hug

Yeh. It's not life or death but pretty stressful none the less. The op manager said she'd see if anyone else available at short notice. My doc supposed to be one of best in area and I just worry that if anything went wrong with someone else I'd be gutted I hadn't just waited a few weeks. Hard to know what to do for the best really. X
