Operated leg points inwards

I’ve only recently noticed (with some alarm)just how pidgeon toed I am with my operated leg/foot.  My foot on the operated side points right in. The other foot is fine and straight. Has anyone else experienced this?

Me too! In the beginning i had pillow between my legs but then i would wrap e end of my cane around the foot and try to train it to stay straight. LOL. Dr told me to just not let the hip and leg roll inward. I have an exercise they gave me that helps. Its called the windshield wiper.

Goodness. The mind boggles lol. I’m not sure how to correct it as I’ve only just spotted it and it’s really pronounced. My OT is coming this week so I will ask her.

Hi just to put your mind at rest I’ve had both hips replaced and my feet turn inwards to I’m presuming it’s normal ha ha,I still have problems with my one that was done to years ago maybe it could be to do with this I don’t no

Same with me for about 3-4 weeks. Therapist and my wife both kept reminding me to focus on walking normal. I did. It’s gone. Focus, you will be as good as new

Well I don’t really want to be walking along with one foot facing the opposite way lol. It’s very noticeable you know

Sarah, I had same thing happen to me. My first THR my foot would turn outward. Now with my other leg which I had done 5 wks ago, my toes would turn inward. After walking some and about the 2-3 week mark I hadn’t even noticed that my foot had straightened out.

You and I are about the same number of weeks but my foot hasnt straightened. I’m in a lot of pain this morning - don’t know why - but will ask OT when she comes.

Sarah yes we are. My surgery was Nov 13, my birthday. Lol

I read your other post about your pain again. I’m sorry.

I don’t recall did u ever contact ur surgeon regarding all this pain?

I’m really frustrated with the pain down side of my leg as well. And the terrible startup pain on both sides too.

Hi Sarah

I was quite concerned with my foot turning inwards. It was really obvious and felt odd as my foot turned outwards before. The physio in hospital said it would come right without anything special and it did. It did take at least 6 weeks, maybe a bit more, not until I was much more mobile and stronger. I remember thinking it was going to stay like that but physio was correct. She was totally unconcerned so maybe quite common.

Thanks for getting back to me, it helps to know I’m not the only one! smile

Hi, my surgery was 25th so 4 weeks then..... no I haven’t contacted anyone really. I get pain all down the operated side too and at the moment I’ve quite a bit of pain at the top of that buttock too. I keep reading about others coming off their pain meds on 2nd day so to speak but I’m nowhere near able to come off mine. Pain wakes me up every single morning at about 4am so I go and make a cup of tea, get another hot water bottle, take pain meds and after an hour or so I can get back to sleep for a couple of hours. It’s now 9am and I can feel the pain returning. Mind you I was incapable of walking before my op. The groin pain was 24/7 and I had to use my rollator to simply get into the kitchen! So maybe if you have excessive wear and tear you get more pain from where the nerves were so irritated before the op?? What do you think?

What has your doctor said about it?

Gosh Sarah you poor thing. You’re going through a lot so sorry. I don’t know why that is. Ur surgeon would give you a better explanation. What has he said?

I too was afraid I had waited too long. I’m very pain tolerant so I went until it was bone to bone.

Hi Sarah

I am the same my foot is turning inwards but when I got my other hip done that never happened, I am glad you mentioned this as I was going to ask my consultant when I go for my check up.  Hope you are sleeping better I am still on the recliner, I got to walk outside today for the first time as the ice has been so bad and I felt great shattered when I came back in but all good.

Hugs

Jacq x

Hi Joyce, I haven’t spoken to anyone about it as yet but my OT lady is coming today so I intend asking her opinion and will let you know.

Hi Jacq, that’s so brave of you to go outside on your crutches. Wow. I am so scared of going outside walking with them in case the rubber ends slip. Maybe they never would but that’s what scares me. I too went out shopping yesterday but took my sturdy rollator with me. My goodness talk about slow walking! I never even looked up. It took 10 minutes to get to the town and by then I was so shattered - and in a little bit of discomfort - I had to sit down on the seat of the rollator to look through the row of cardigans I was after. Then I walked to the supermarket to get things I was out of but again I was totally cream crackered  by the time I finally arrived so guess what? I used their mobility scooter to go around. I vowed I would never use one of those things again but my poor legs ached so much I honestly could not have walked anymore. I then got a taxi home. So all in all I was pleased I actually went out for a walk even though I cheated a bit using the rollator instead of crutches. My OT lady is coming tomorrow so I will ask her about my twisted foot.

Back in 2009, I had a left THR (Total Hip Replacement). It was immediately after the surgery my whole left leg was turned 45 degrees out. I brought this to my surgeon's attention at my first post ops appointment. The Doctor stated this would be straitened out in physical therapy. After about a year after the surgery and having been through physical therapy. I returned to the Doctor and Well I am here to tell you. I got a bunch of excuses none of which corrected my problem with my turned out leg. It know is Mach 20,2018 almost 10 years later and my leg is still turned 45 degrees out. The pain got so sever in the HIP, Knee and FEET. I was forced to go to my new Orthopedic Doctor.

This is where It was determined my Knee needs to be replace ASAP. It also appears when my Hip was replaced it was installed with the wrong rotation. This is what is causing my leg to rotate 45 degrees outward. My current Doctor stated when the original Doctor installed the hip. He most likely used standard presets to position the leg and this clearly was not enough rotation. So know to correct this I will need a revision on my left hip as well.

So bottom line is, first the knee replacement and then the Hip revision. I am awaiting the Doctor to schedule the Knee surgery. The knee surgery will not correct the turned out issue. However it will at least relieve me of at least the knee pain. Then to address the hip issue? I have awaited a long time and dealt with a lot of pain because of this issue. I hope once this is complete I will be able to walk again without a cane. I waddle so bad from side to side when I walk. My wife and I can't even walk beside each other because if she does I will bump into her every time I take a step.

I hope you have some sort of solution to your turned in foot.
