Since 2009 I've at times felt a little shall I say clumsy while walking with the feeling that things were moving when they were not along with almost constant ear pressure in my right ear just enough to be bothersome. In November 2011 I had my first epsisode of vertigo that lasted about 6 hrs. In June 2012 I had another episode of vertigo also lasting about 6 hours. In December 2012 I had another episode of verigo again lasting about 6 hrs. At this time I mentioned all this to my doctor. He asked if had any hearing loss and I said no.. My hearing was tested and I was told it was okay for my age. I'm in my early 60's. I was told I have BPPV and to look on youtube for instructions on how to do the Epley manuever. On 6/13 I had another epsidsode of verigo again. I was to sick with nausea to try the Eply manuever but tried it at the tail end and it seemed to help. Or was the vertigo just going away on it's own? in 5/14 I noticed louder than normal ringing in my ear and then started a mild case of vertigo which lasted 12 hours. I did try the Epley manuever and noticed no improvement. But I think I didn't do it right. In between all these bouts of vertigo has been the ear pressure (nearly constant) in my right ear, with mild to moderate sinus allergy issues with an occasional low grade sinus headache. Three weeks ago 1/15 I had another epsiode of vertigo that landed me in the ER via an ambulance as for the first time I was vomiting uncontrollaby. They wanted to do an MRI to rule out stroke or tumor. I was ready go until they layed me down on the hard plastic bed in which case my neck was killing me. I knew I could not endure that for the 40 minutes it would take. Even with pills to relax me all the while still under the effects of vertigo. The next morning the spinning had stopped. I was very tired, feeling weak and ended sleeping on and off most of that day. When I went to see my regular he did not see a need to schedule an MRI. I agree and don't agree with decision as I believe it is one of the steps to really find for sure what is or is not going on. Once again I was instructed to keep trying the Epley manuever with the belief I have BPPV. I'm not quite convinced this is BPPV as now I have periods loud ringing in my left ear (my good ear) with off and on ear pressure. Usually ear pressure following by ringing. I have not noticed any loss of hearing. The only other symtoms I can mention are what feels like burning in my ear, an itchy ear canal and twinges of ear ache now also in my left ear that come and go quickly. I might add that my brother has been diagnosed with Meneirs. He has all the symptoms except vertigo. I was told Meneirs is not inherited. Since my doctor to this point has been of little help my one thought is that when I have another bout of vertigo is to tough it out and do the Epley manuever along with what is called the half somersault and see if that clears the vertigo. If so then I would think that it proves the case for BPPV. I'm wondering if Meniers must also always present itself with hearing loss. Any thoughts?
Phew - that's quite a saga. I've never heard of BPPV or the Epley manoeuvre before, but I'm pretty sure I've got Meniere's. Sudden vertigo attacks lasting 1 - 2 hours, really loud tinnitus, fullness and deafness in one ear are the classic symptoms. I had my first vertigo attack over 30 years ago, but have only suffered loss of hearing over the last few years. Interestingly, my father had the condition as well. Sorry you don't find your doctor helpful - I would try hard to get proper support from him/her, and failing that change your doctor.
My own strategy for the condition is to try and not let it get the better of me. I carry a sick bag and some Stemetil tablets with me whenever I go out.
Dear Will72
Well by reading this I would say you have got Menierres I have had it for 6 yrs with all your symtoms .I take betherszine 3 times a day they say it helps with the pressure .I use a stick all the time I use Travel bands on my wrists for the sickness.and i take anti sickness pills for the virtigo and sickness .its a dredfull complaint with no known cure do see your DK ,join a menieres group face book have a very good one with over 800 members all suffering as we do ,it realy helps to talk about it do keep us uptodate
Hi Will, what you are describing sure sounds like similar to my history, almost without exception on this forum people are dissatisfied with thier GPs diagnosis, its been said before they only label it menieres when all else proves negative, several people have said to me when I describe my symptoms, " oh I have that too" because they get dizzy spells, but as you know an attack of menieres is unfortunatly far more than a dizzy spell, they dont know how lucky they actually are! what you describe definitly sounds like you have menieres, it was a long time before my hearing detrioated, I thought my mobile phone was at fault at first as I was struggling to hear people, that took 6 months including changing my phone before i actually realised it was me! but like you I am in my 60s so maybe at a younger age our bodies could regenerate the damage.I have reccomended a book before on here " Menieres Man and the Astronaut" that may give you more clarity,if you do find a medical practioner who gets it, let us all know, good luck
Good morning will72.
All of the doctors I saw early on were wrong. Do not rule out problems with your brain until you have been checked out.
Brain seizure symptoms have much in common with Menieres.
Good luck Dan T.
