Hello osteporosis sufferers,
I've got osteopenia and started treatment using Actonel for 5 years and then Protelos. I was taken off Protelos, as it appeared to be giving me bad headaches and also because its safety was dubious.
Now I'm on nothing but very concerned that I should take something to prevent it getting worse.
Has anyone tried Prolia and if yes, were there any side effects?
Stefania
I was given Fosamax, once a week for life. I was getting more and more tired, not full of energy like normal. I decided to stop taking any medication and instead try to build up bone density myself. I have a healthy diet and keep active but what is needed is weight bearing exercise. So on my brisk 1/2hr morning walks I carry a backpack with three water bottles - 5kg/10lbs. Perhaps I will invest in a couple of weights to carry in my hands, thereby also strengthening the arms. I feel so much better though and hopefully my bones are benefiting.
When doctors make prescriptions they usually don't take diet and lifestyle in consideration. Therefor, I recon, I was given the same as a couch-potato who doesn't need energy. But life in an easy hair is no life for me.
Hello Ulla,
I too am active, as I walk 2 miles nearly every morning with my dogs. Despite this, and a good diet, I have osteopenia. But I must try your idea with the backpack!
Perhaps I'll have my DEXA scan sooner rather than later and see what it is now. Unfortuately I can't carry weights in bth hands, as I have a lymphoedema problem in one arm......
Take care,
Stefanie
Hi Stefanie,
Very similar here. After having the glands taken out in one arm I'm potentially prone to lymphoedema. But this does not stop me from lifting heavy objects. I think the more I can do to strengthen mussels and increase blood flow the better.
Cheers- Ulla
Hello Ulla,
You're lucky it doesn't affect you. I tried some weights last year and my wrist swelled up very badly - took months to get it back down again. Do you wear a sleeve?
Take care,
Stefanie
