I just wanted to share my good news. Finally after what has seemed an eternity, I am now walking without horrendous pain and have recently started back at the gym. Happy days following months of misery and upset. If anyone else has had a similar experience and felt like giving up, DON'T. I honestly didn't think it would take this long but unfortunately it has and believe me the only way forward is to remain positive. Don't let anyone make you think you are imagining it all because you are not. I knew something was wrong after 3 months but was put off constantly and had to fight for further treatment/investigation. Even after being diagnosed with CRPS and wrote off to pain management, I simply wouldn't accept this and knew this was wrong. My main problem centred around the first metatarsal joint which would not bend downwards and was affecting the sesamoid bones/tendon and foot function. This only started to move on its own at the end of September and my foot has progressed with the help of physiotherapists. They have pushed me to the limit and I cannot thank them enough. I now believe a full recovery is in sight and that means normality. This is a hard surgery to recover from and if like me you are left challenged by this, don't give up. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
Hi Jacqueline. I am 12 weeks post op for scarf akin osteotomy and mortons neuroma on same foot and although there is some improvement it has left me doubtful if I will ever fully recover. I get dreadful nerve pains all the time which makes my foot jump and underneath big toe is very painful when I try to walk. I can now get a soft pair of trainers on for a short while. My foot is still going dark purple if not elevated for. Does this sound similar to what you have experienced. It gives me hope that you are at last on road to some normality.
Hi Sandy, I too still get some nerve pain but this is subsiding the more my foot is healing and I am increasing activity. I have some custom made orthotics which also help support my foot when walking. I also still get some discolouration in my foot but this tends to be extreme cold/heat. Your experience is similar to mine and may just take time to heal fully. Once the joint at the first metatarsal began to move everything else seemed to fall into place because this was the major stumbling block affecting my foot function. I too could not bear any weight or push off on the toe as the tendon/sesamoid bones were damaged but once the joint loosened this enable those crucial elements to work naturally again. Physio has helped me enormously in my recovery and may be something that could help you. I just kept going back to the consultant requesting further treatments/investigation until they finally acknowledged an issue with my sesamoid bones via an MRI. Keep me informed with your progress
Hi Jacqueline,
I agree with you that the surgery is a very long recovery, as it invovled a small bone. The bigger the size bone the faster it recovers.
Like you, I am 14 months post op for scarf osteotomy at my left foot. Exactly 12 month (1 year), no more swelling and pain free. I did not go for any physiotherapy but massage my foot on my own.
