hi andy, i was only 32 when i found out i had diverticulitis, i am now 56, it can be controlled by diet, dont do what i did for years eat the wrong foods because i have got a lot worse were now i have to have a operation, this is my own fault for not taking the consultants advice about my eating habits, your gp should give you a diet sheet, and you should really stick to, because it is what you eat that starts the pain off, 75% of the population has diverticulitis, but most dont have any problems and indeed dont know they have it until they might have problems with something else and it is found, stay healthy, regards jeanie

Thanks for replying Jeannie

do you know yourself what kind of foods set this off or is it a case of different things for different people?

With your diet sheet aswell is this something that you have to stick to relligously or can you on the very odd occasion have what you want?

andy

Hi Andy

As far as what food to eat to control your divi, I haven't a clue. I eat the same things. I always cook for myself so I know what I'm eating, don't eat take-aways, junk food, ready meals, so its really trial and error. If you start to write down what you eat in a day then if it flairs up you could maybe pinpoint it a bit better. All I know is tomatoes coz of the pips, nuts, rice and sweetcorn. This is because they are not digested and pass along the intestine in small bits that get stuck in the pouches and cause infection. Curries tend to make you a little raw inside so eating something else after can set it off, also most curries are served with rice so that doesn't help. Saying that I don't like curry and never eat it, so as you can see that is why I say trial and error. I think diet sheets might help but I found a lot of what was on the one I got I didn't eat anyway. Hope this helps a little and let us know how you get on. Try not to worry too much and just remember you are not alone theres a lot of out there.

Take care of yourself. Marie
